By implication, it says that the mountain of despair where we live should be guarded by a river of fire and dragons, but the artifacts should not. I presume this is to ensure that the items are never destroyed by the volcano itself. This is not necessarily a problem, we have no dragons but we can certainly build a magma moat, and we can build a vault on the foothills outside it away from the mountain. And yet the orders are also clear on how magma should be used.

76. If the hero runs up to my roof, I will not run up after him and struggle with him in an attempt to push him over the edge. I will also not engage him at the edge of a cliff. (In the middle of a rope-bridge over a river of molten lava is not even worth considering.)

87. My vats of hazardous chemicals will be covered when not in use. Also, I will not construct walkways above them.

It would seem that a bridge over magma is forbidden, yet a magma moat is mandatory. I was pondering this dilemma in my office when interrupted by Doc Zaerosz' polite knock on the door. I record my conversation with him as accurately as my memory will allow, as I am absolutely certain I will want to review this later, if only to wonder what lunacy made me agree to it.


Maybe its time to construct a magma moat that you drain every time you need to enter or exit. Like, some floodgates that make part of it into a tunnel and screw pumps that empty that tunnel...

OH! use the magma waterfall from the incredibles. You build a magma-fall over the pathway, and have it fall on the pathway and drain to the sides, and then split it whenever you want people to come in.

16th Timber, 301


It's very reassuring to see that our supply caravan has arrived at long last. I understand that a rebellion will always be strong in terms of people and weak on resources, but this fort in the middle of nowhere must by absolute necessity be an exception. Rationing or no, we need food, wood and equipment if we are to serve any useful purpose. The Overlord's smugglers are very welcome here. Welcome, that is, once they have provided the code phrase.





Less welcome is the company they keep. The pack beasts of the caravan must have left a trail, which these sneaking thieves have followed. Imp discovered a kobold spying at our entrance, but was too slow to stop it. Rock doesn't see a blow coming, rock doesn't try to dodge; I can excuse a miner for failing to make a blow connect. By the time I arrived, the spy had fled over the mountain, its skills in the arts of stealth rendering it impossible to find.



Most consider kobolds to be mere scavenging savages, chittering tribal idiots who steal what they are too stupid to make, but this is not the full truth. Some of them are civilised enough to realise secrets can be more valuable than shiny trinkets. We can only hope that our visitor was not one such.

The exchange of goods went smoothly although I did have to suppress the urge to punch the smuggler who proudly revealed that he had brought... mini forges. He thought that since we had gone without metalworking tools for so long, we might appreciate them. I let him find out the true situation for himself as the minions brought in our own offerings of 40 sets of mini-forges, each with a tiny stone hammer.

I can forgive this one lapse of judgement as in every other case they have brought exactly what we need. Food, tools, steel bolts, timber, cloth to keep out the cold, and best of all, a partial set of good bismuth bronze armour which I have claimed for my personal use.

After the caravan had left and I returned to examine the bare floor where our goods had been kept, I noticed a single item, and instantly burst out laughing.



After weeks of seeing Zaerosz stalking the halls, agitatedly double and triple checking to see if any animals were available to be butchered, seeing this figure was exactly what I needed to release the pressures of command. Whoever decided that it should be kept gets my thanks, and the figurine now takes pride of place in my room. It will certainly make dealing with the Doc easier with this sitting between us in our meetings.

I really must find out more about Guy the Second, this evil sense of humour of his appeals to me.



5th Opal, 301

Today I took a tour of the outside projects as an excuse to take another hunting trip. The vault location has been chosen in a concealed crevice between foothills at the base of the mountain, and Istas has been carving it a set of chambers in secret.



Progress on the prison building has been very nearly nonexistent. A short stretch of wall sits in the middle of the plains, a staked out set of guide markers lying unattended in the wastes. Zaerosz clearly lacks the talent for motivation that only a loud shouting voice and a loaded crossbow can give.



At least his construction project has one benefit - it is a superb location to hunt.




The two architect/mechanics are on the request list, you'll have to wait until migrants turn up. We've run out of unclaimed dwarfs again.

Tuxman: once again a fantastic idea which I will have severe trouble in making work. I'll keep that one in mind as well, once I've got some power infrastructure up, a working control room and more workers, I'll see if I can do this somewhere. For the front gates however... something simpler.

Alright, and Kezan would hopefully have the Custom profession of "The Architect". He will have mind of planning the traps, a small office preferably, a 'drafting room' as he would call it. even a 2x2 with table and chair.

It was at this point that I realised that dwarves are actually the essence of chaos. What else can make perpetual motion machines, recursive statues with more building materials than the average tower and has such a short attention span that a damn fine chair can off-set the death of their entire family.

For the magma moat vs bridge rule, you could simply leave a passage in the moat and trap it excessively, putting the drawbridge before the moat. Keep a wall between the passage and the moat.

That way you strategically keep traffic in one spot you can guard, and you don't risk falling in the moat.

Of course let's not forget the secret exits too. There's a way to build exits that are one-way: with a closed bridge you can open with a lever on the inside. But I feel it's too risky for gremlins and traitors. Any idea to make it more safe?

Kezan comes to the trusted lieutenant, having been pondering rule 5, "I have an idea that will provide a way to accomplish the fifth rule, while also providing a lasting defense, for the Overlord Fortifications or bars set along the sides of the bridge to provide solid railings, to allow passage over the moat, without risk of falling to the sides. "This is just an example, drawn up to illustrate the core design. The bridge either retracting or drawbridge, either would work. I had ordered the construction of a magma moat despite the uncertainty in the List and was taking time to oversee the work. I had decided that if two fortified towers were placed to either side of the magma pit and the drawbridge were to completely cover the space between them, that this would satisfy the requirement for hazardous substances to be covered. Perhaps with no gaps to the side this would be safe enough as not to be considered a walkway?



A brief time with Sergeant Ireheart as his squad took their patrol changed that plan entirely. It is so simple! The magma need not stay under the walkway, it is only needed there when the drawbridge is up. Producing a set of iron pumps will be time consuming but not difficult, we can certainly do it. If the pit can be drained, the walkway is allowable under the List! The base of each tower can act as a magma cistern and storage tank for when we need safe passage over the bridge, all that is needed is a means to power the pumps. Within five minutes of talking to the Sergeant I was running off to fetch the masons and miners, calling for the plans to be changed. Ireheart will be well rewarded for this. I will see that his squad is given first choice of new recruits and equipment once the Legions of Terror are brought to battle readiness. In the meantime, however, there is much work still to be done. Rule 25 must be taken seriously in designing a device such as this.

25. No matter how well it would perform, I will never construct any sort of machinery which is completely indestructible except for one small and virtually inaccessible vulnerable spot.




22nd Slate, 302



More minions arrived today, more than doubling our number. The fortress population now stands at 40 dwarfs, all loyal to the Overlord and to the cause.

DoomPotato's squad handled the newcomers efficiently, checking their tranfer orders and ensuring the Overlord's seal was the true mark. They report no problems. The only notable figure among the arrivals was a small girl child of only four years age. It seems that Overlord predicts a need for an advisor here over the next year.

15th Felsite, 302

This morning has been a complete farce.

I know now where those kobold spies have been spreading our secrets. They have told the elves of our location, but they must have told them garbled half-truths and guesswork, because the elves seem to think we are here hidden away in the most inaccessable and hostile location to be found anywhere in the world, having chosen this spot because we want visitors. They claim to be trying to trade peacefully, and they certainly are carrying goods instead of weapons, but their filthy kobold allies are travelling with them.





Even venturing so close to the legionaries these spies are impossible to catch. Once they climb over a ridge on the mountain, they are as good as gone. They climb even faster than the mountain goats, and hide with a skill the like of which I've never seen.

The elves themselves, they're... strange.

It isn't that they don't understand threats, they do, but they don't react to them in any way you would expect. When I pointed out to them that they were unarmed and I wasn't, all they would say was that they mourned for "the unfortunate creature who's life was taken to create that weapon." Nothing works to intimidate them!

I tried to make it clear to them that they were unwelcome here. They're not our enemies and I doubt they would care about our rebellion even if I told them directly, but this fort is not a roadside inn. Even seizing their goods at crossbowpoint didn't make them take the hint, so eventually I gave up and went back to my office. It was a mistake.



Their leader followed me, all the while trying to explain his diplomatic role here and telling me how they could "stoop to being friends with barbarians", only shutting up once we had reached my office. I realised why only when I saw the direction of his speechless stare, too late. He had seen the artifact - still sitting in my office waiting for the storage vault to be completed. It is too late to keep the secret of our location, it is too late to keep the secret of our construction, but our purpose here must be kept from the outside world, and the artifacts are a part of this.

There was only one way to correct my error. I invited him in, claiming we needed privacy to hold our meeting. He was easy to handle, shocked and babbling with outrage, demanding to know how we "dare to tear trees apart to create such an item", his preaching leading him to be blind to the danger right up until I shot him.



Even trapped, bleeding to death on the floor with his limbs pinned to his body, he refused to be intimidated! His last words were to demand that we make no more such trinkets from wood, and how he absolutely demanded that we cut down no more than 100 trees next year.

I shot him in the head without replying.

6. I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them.

7. When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No."



By the time I returned to the entrance doorways, the other elves had gone. I really do not understand them, but now they have been warned. If any more elves are foolish enough to come here, they will die.








I really wasn't expecting the game to allow a kill order to a squad and a conduct meeting job for a leader to be allowed to run at the same time. The game really did have the elf continue his meeting job, even while being shot to death. The "conduct meeting" job description was still there all the way through, I wish I had got a screenshot of it now.



TurkeyXIII - Your dwarf is in, but the kid turned out to be female. I've named her Timmi for now, unless you'd like to pick another name.

Production Log of Urist the Red, Chief Architect
15th Felsite, 302


The boss has been acting strange ever since that elf broke in. He's been sulking in his office most of the time, and he only came out to give a few of us new orders.

Including me.

He's organised the minions into work teams, left a few of us in charge of them as work chiefs, then he just told us to get on with things and left. Nobody has any idea what he's up to, and I'm just glad we have enough free time now to speculate about it. As long as he hasn't gone completely mad, and I don't think he has, I don't care - the fort will run fine without him.

I've been made chief architect and put in charge of the moat project, on condition that I volunteer to take on one particular job to "prove my loyalty" after that cave wall argument last year.

Most of moat work is just letting the miners dig their tunnel towards the vent of the volcano, acting as leader for them is really easy. They know where to go, I know what they're doing, nothing more needs to be said. There will be a lot more work to do on the surface soon but it has to wait until the metalworkers have got enough good iron to make a solid, trustworthy drawbridge.





Imp took some time off from mining to make a truly beautiful carved grate which everybody seems very excited about. It slowed the digging work a little but it was still completed on time so I didn't complain. Honestly I would have been happy if it had been late, because the bit that comes next is... scary.



This is the job I had to volunteer for. It's not quite the same usage of the word "volunteer" that I'm used to, but no matter, I would have truly volunteered if I had a choice. The Overlord's work needs to be done.

For any reading this who haven't released magma, the technique is great fun, as long as you're not the one doing it. You have to mine right up close, so close that you can feel the heat of the magma through the stone, and then start smoothing the wall thinner and thinner, and then thinner still... Eventually you're left with a huge pane of stone only a finger thick holding back red hot molten blood of the earth, and that's where the real fun begins.



You throw the biggest rock you can heave, straight at the centre of the thin spot, and run like hell. No, in fact you run as if hell was right behind you. If any of you are ever going to try this, don't wait to see if the stone cracked. If it didn't, run anyway. All you have to lose is your dignity, instead of your skin.



I'm still here of course, unburned and with my loyalty unquestioned. And now? Sod the building work, it can wait a few days. I'm going to go get drunk. By my reckoning, the metalworkers crew owe me a hefty share of their drink rations for this one.

so what have you done with the platypus?

The figurine GuyII made? It's in Tannen's bedroom now, but once the artifact vault is complete it will go back into the office.
