Fun things to do with hydras?
« on: August 13, 2010, 10:50:04 am »

I caught a hydra and am wondering what to do with it.  Out of all its heads one has its brain crushed but its otherwise healthy.  Could I edit the raws and make it a war hydra?  or at least a tame chained hydra?

I used mine as an arena combatant. It died. Then I caught another stronger one, wich also went to the arena. It now only has five working heads.

I don't think it's useful for anything. Atleast dragons have the [MOUNT] tag last I checked. I guess you could allow it to be adopted just to see who would want it as pet.
Alternatively you could sell it.
No idea wether you can breed them if you have both sex of them, might be fun to have a squad of hydra gaurds instead of gaurd dog.

Whatever you do, have fun with it. And if it dies make hydra leather boots out of it. And hydra soap, filthy hydra soap   :D

I could put him in a glass walled room in the middle of my fortress, and pit goblins to him.  I don't think he would eat the bodies though, and the miasma could be a problem.

Are the fortresses there for psychological reasons?  Are they trying to hold back entropy itself, rather than the goblin hordes?

Back in 40d, megabeasts were not tamable whatsoever, or breedable.
Assuming the same is still true, your choices are very limited.

They can be tamed with a Dungeon Master. Replacing [PET_EXOTIC] with [PET] will probably make it tameable by the laydwarf, but as I've never tested it I can't be sure. They do have male and female variants, incidentally. Hydra farm!
They can't be trained as war/hunting animals, but even a non-trained hydra would make a formidable augmentation to your defenses-- and when its last head died you'd have piles and piles of high-value animal products.
They can also be pets.

Beyond that...it'd be an amazing zoo centerpiece.
