question about exploration
« on: August 13, 2010, 06:33:35 am »

(in regular dwarf fortress mode) the area that ive embarked in is only a small portion of the world, is it impossible to venture outside of it? if not impossible, how is it done? i dug a moat around my entire local embark zone/area/whatever and the stupid miner digging the channel got stuck on the far side by digging from the wrong side like an idiot. now monkeys who are arriving in the area hoping to steal worthless junk from me while interrupting all my workers are attacking the miner and none of my dwarves have the guts to build a floor close enough to the monkeys so that he can cross back over the channel. they go to build it, see the monkeys, run away and suspect construction. he is a legendary miner and id prefer he didnt die of thirst or hunger, or go insane although as far as im concerned it would be his fault and might constitute a darwin award -.-

Not yet possible. Being able to go offsite will is planned to be in a future update, but might take a few years to arrive.

If you run out of room then you can do one of three things:
1)Dig deeper
2)Build higher
3)Embark on a larger space next time

Since he's a miner, he can tunnel his way back home.  No problem.  And if his "return home" tunnel messes up your moat, those walls and stuff can be re-constructed.

And a legendary miner at that. Just dig down, under the moat and back up again. If he's tunneling through sand and clay and such it'll be a matter of seconds. If it's stone, he might even be able to block the tunnel behind him with a wall as he goes. Just make sure to he builds it from the right side if you try it.

... Just make sure to he builds it from the right side if you try it.

You can make sure that he builds it from the proper side by pausing the game, placing a Statue on each square that you DON'T want him to stand on, suspending construction of the Statues... so that no-one actually tries to build them... and then un-pausing. He will build it from the square that you've left open. Remember that Walls (and some other constructions) can ONLY be built from a tile that connects orthogonally (right, left, up or down)... not diagonally.

After he's built it, just cancel the un-built statues with 'q' - 'x'.

i got him out, somehow the monkeys left and i built the floor. he couldnt dig out because the moat is 1 tile away from the zone edge, which is untouchable by digging or building. now whenever i try to remove the floor, they ALWAYS try from the wrong side. a young child decided to deconstruct it and got stuck, and was gored by a mountain goat. as for placing suspended constructions/buildings, i cant because its too near the edge of the map. is there no way i can tell dwarves to stay off the edge of the map?

Build a raising bridge and link it to a lever, once you collect whatever you want from the border, raise the bridge.

Deconstruct it by dropping a construction on it from the level above... in other words, build an overhanging platform one level up that reaches out over the floor tile you want removed, suspend a construction on the tip of it (to make sure no-one stands there), and dismantle the floor tile that connects that last tile. I'm assuming that there's solid ground down under your Moat.
