how do i let water pass through doors?
« on: August 13, 2010, 04:48:13 am »

Hi, newbie here, this seems like an elementary thing however, it just aint working.

I am trying to flood some underground rooms to farm I have water sourced from a river being held back by a door, but the water will not pass through no matter what I do with the three options I can toggle for the door.

You need to link it to a lever (Note: The link to a DF 40d version page, which is outdated. However, the 40d page is far more detailed then the 31 version page, and likely not much has changed in how levers work between versions), then the door will be controlled by the lever, then you can open/close the door at will by switching the lever on and off. The three options just control what kind of traffic can go through the door, and if the door is a internal to the room door, or an external to the room door.

In case it's not clear, Internal means that room designations will flood-fill through the door, rather than being blocked by the door.

So if you want to make a multi-chambered bedroom or something, that's how you do it.

Bear in mind that after it's been linked to a lever, the Door will no longer function as a normal Door. The ONLY way to get through it will be to use the lever. After your Farm is irrigated, you might want to deconstruct the Door ( 'q' - 'x' ) and replace it with a normal door again.

If you do deconstruct the door make sure to deconstruct the lever as well (assuming you haven't attached anything else to it) to get the mechanisms from it back.

He can't deconstruct the door, not without flooding his fortress.

I assumed that he had put a floodgate in the path of the incoming water, and only needed to let it through a door at the end.

This is Dwarf Fortress. Nothing can be assumed! Everything must be tested! For SCIENCE! Well, for our amusement, at least.  :P

rofl, you guys are hilarious.

I had not put a floodgate in the path pf the water, I assumed that I could either attach the floodgate or the door to the lever and have it work the same, but the door option won out, i mean helllooo, adventure mode?

"Hmmm what could be behind this door?"

*scratches head*

"Ungh!" *pants*

"darn thing won't budge.... maybe a lever?"

*looks around....*

"Ah HA!"

*sploosh!*

Floodgates work very similarly to doors attached to levers. The only differences are that
1. Doors can only be installed only near walls, and floodgates anywhere.
2. Doors open immediately after pulling the lever, while floodgates have a delay. It can be useful in computing, when used along with drawbridges, which have the same delay.

However, if it is not connected to a lever, a floodgate will never open.

I did not know this....I was having problems with floodgates being delayed, TIME TO TEST!!!

This probably hasn't changed, but in 40d if part of the things attached to a lever/pressure plate were delayed then all of the things attached to it were delayed.

Another interesting thing is that raising bridges and floodgates operate inversely, when both a floodgate and a bridge are attached to a lever the floodgate will be open when the bridge is rasied, and the floodgate will be closed when the bridge is lowered.

I do believe that is simply the nature of a bridge and a flood gate's initial use.  Both simply seem to deconstruct their default volume, nothing interesting or innovative.  The bridge does not stand vertically as it would seem.

You can always just attach a second lever to the Bridge or Floodgate, and use it once to toggle the state of one of the constructions... once they are put "into sync", they will stay that way through all subsequent uses.
