I think it was decided in another thread a while back that dwarven underground plants grow using energy from microscopic perpetual motion machines, similar to how dwarven forts are commonly powered.

plants photosythesize using the light from glowing mushrooms, mushrooms feed on decaying plant matter.  The animals feed mostly on poorly equipped militia dwarfs and scout cats.

Clearly all of those "trees" and "shrubs" underground are nothing more than offshoots of the World Tree.  There's probably a world-eating monstrous dragon-snake coiled up somewhere down there too, made of some sort of impenetrable material that can't be dug through.

Mushrooms are the base of the ecosystem.

What do the mushrooms feed on? More mushrooms.

Its mushrooms all the way down.
For people who didn't get the reference

I laughed so hard when I read that. I'm glad no-one else is in the house.

I'm going with magic, because it's hard to imagine there's enough energy floating around from geothermal or geophagal sources to maintain that kind of biomass.  So:  DF world is permeated by a magical energy field, which interacts strongly with certain types of matter, breaking chemical bonds and so on.  Various fungi and whatnot can channel this energy to break bonds of various substances and run their metabolism.  The field is stronger at certain distances from the core of DF world, due to...umm...the quantum.  In these areas the field slowly wears away at the rock's chemical structure, creating extensive caverns.

So you're saying the underground runs on the corrupt magical residue of the HFS?

I like it! Kill the demons... and you doom all life in the underground...

Algae whose photosynthesis runs on magic instead of sunlight. Come on, if magic exists, stuff will figure out how to eat it.

No. Trees don't grow from elves. Elves use the trees, but they aren't grown on themselves.

I think I remember that.

Microscopic water wheels and pumps forever delivering the energy needed to sustain life. That's why some floors need to be muddied for farming, plump helmets need that water to fuel fusion perpetual motion.
