New skill: Hauling
« on: August 14, 2007, 12:34:00 pm »

I would like to suggest the addition of a new skill: Hauling. This skill would be increased (very slowly) by completing any hauling job and it would not be associated with a profession. The skill, and higher levels in the skill, would have no in game effect. So why bother you ask? Two reasons:

1) It would make haulers eligible for stat increases over time. The rate of increase on the skill would need to be pretty low so as to not be abused for this purpose. But having somone who has been working their ass off keeping your fort running for years with still no stat bonuses is pretty lame.

2) It would mean that haulers, who are very important to the proper running of a fort, would not be completely boned when the economy starts up. Since they would have a skill rank and be payed appropriately.

Hauling rocks all day should logically grant strength boosts at least, that or cripple you.   :D

This is a good solution to the problem.  Hauling isn't skilled labor, but it's good exercise.

I liked the suggestion a while back of making hauling a union job.  It should pay based on distance covered, and maybe the weight of the item.  Paying haulers based on skill doesn't make much sense, but a better hauler will move faster (higher strength and agility) and work longer shifts (higher toughness).

Isn't there in fact some tecnique to hauling things, you know "lift with the legs" or whatever. Especially for heavy things. Shouldn't a hauling skill then actually HAVE an effect on the haulers effectivity?

Perhaps a bit. It might also be nice to have Lifting Belts that give a slight increase to carrying capacity, as another thing to make out of leather or rope reeds...

It does, via stat gains.

For hauling, effectiveness means speed, and speed is just walking speed minus a weight penalty.  So what does improvement mean?  Either higher walking speed or lower weight penalty.

If a hauler gets higher walking speed when hauling, he should get it when doing anything else, which is the Agile trait.  And if he has a lower weight penalty while hauling, that should also apply when carrying things for other reasons, and that's the Strong trait.  Other than that, there's the Tough trait which lets them work longer shifts.

Exactly, I think (at least to begin with) simply allowing a slow gain of stats over time for hauling would work well. And, having recently played a fort with economy on, the peasants doing all the hauling really do get shafted in that situation.
