Although you have to put up with the 'creature killed a hero' message over and over of course.

Another reason that mechanic is dumb.  Because as some point you don't care about who kills heroes because you have "enough" soul points.

The thing that rubs me the wrong way is that the game does it's best to force me to go and kill the heroes with my avatar. That should not be necessary.

Otherwise I have no major issues and think it's an enjoyable enough game.

That is my single major gripe.
There's a few other issues, but that was the core mechanic that I feel they did wrong.

If you find that you shouldn't have ot make your avatar do all the work in killing the heroes, then try to poke around in the game files; specifically, those with the minion stats.  You should be able to boost their health and attack for each level without much fuss.  Just a hint.

One thing that would have improved the game a lot would be having free roaming minions, but probably with the option to confine them to one area. the game has some potential, even ias a not-DK-clone. It's just a lot of it is poorly executed.

I think Dungeons just fell into the trap of being overly satisfied its own design. There's this nice, tight little package of game play that they've thoroughly developed.

But they kind of stopped there. They didn't allow for random chaos that the player can really control. They didn't provide enough activities or things to watch happen once the main action is over.

If I had to state Realmforge's balance between game play ideas and art, I'd say the split is about 35/65. There's lots and lots of and lots of art going on in Dungeons, and game play is "enough" to qualify for a game. For the really hardcore sim gamers though, there's not enough there to really dig into, to provide a few solid replays trying different things.

Wandering monsters is one suggestion that was immediately made and I hope they consider. The list of feature requests at this point though is huge, and given all the bad press and negative reactions, I would not be surprised if Kalypso decides to back out of further Dungeons support. We'll see.

So apparently the latest update added a mode where your primary goal is to let fully-satisfied heroes escape.  Anyone give it a shot yet?  Clearly you don't have to run around killing them, but do you still have to worry about them going after your Dungeon Heart?

I'd wonder where your gold comes from, but I'm guessing they pay an entrance fee or something, and your prestige rises when they escape.

Haven't tried it. I was kind of underwhelmed by the patch, and how long it took to get out. I'm sort of on the fence about the game until I see where Realmforge is heading. After that super annoying mission, I haven't been able to bring myself back to play it.

Are you kidding?!
Setting, maybe, but this is precisely the game I was hoping for as soon as the first information started coming out.  Clearly we expect different things from it.  It sure as hell isn't Dungeon Keeper, but I liked Theme Hospital better than Dungeon Keeper anyway.

If I wanted a themepark game I'd have bought a themepark game.

When I pre-ordered Dungeons, I WAS buying a themepark game.

You should understand, in debating Draco18s, is that Dungeons 2011 is his opportunity to just rage. He doesn't like the game, won't play it anymore, but still comes here to trash it pretty much every opportunity he has.

And yes, it's been irritating me for a while now.

That's fine, but it was marketed (from my perspective) as an RTS-ish game.  Not a themepark game.

It indeed did sound vaguely more RTS than themepark-y.
