Bones are the new shell?
« on: August 12, 2010, 04:05:13 am »

How do I get bones? Do I have to butcher things? Drop things off high places? Both? A possessed animal handler just went insane over a lack of bones, not a problem I've ever had before. EDIT: do vermin have bones?

Vermin do not have bones. I find that the easiest way to get bone (and also a bunch of meat) is by slaughtering and butchering the wildlife. Even if you don't butcher the corpses, I believe after a while you will have a pile of bones left.

You end up with a skeleton which still has to be butchered so generally its worth it do so before it rots.

Vermin do not have bones.
Neither do kittens. It beats me how the little buggers manage to stand up.

What bugs me is that bones aren't in the list of types of things in the refuse stockpile edit screen anymore.  In old DF, I'd make an underground refuse pile that only allowed bones, and disallowed bones from my outside one.  That way, stanky corpses go on the pile outside, they rot, and then the bones get moved indoors, where they don't rot further.  I'd have a huge pile of bones even if no bony creature had died in years.

If you're playing 0.31.x then you still need to butcher the corpse, it just turns into a skeleton (and you don't get any meat/fat/etc).

The easiest way to get bones is to butcher a tame animal.

You can still have a bone stockpile, forbid everything from the stockpile except body parts (use 'b', otherwise they may put cut off limbs in it too). One disadvantage of the new version is that shells and unusable things like hair also go into the stockpile and have to be dumped out if you don't want the stockpile to eventually be filled up with useless stuff.

Bones are now a part of "body parts" section of the refuse stockpiles. Make one with only those allowed, while setting the outside one to accept all but "body parts", and it'll function almost as good as in 40d.
The body parts stockpiles will, unfortunatelly, also get cluttered with hair, nails, cartilege and severed limbs(I'm not sure about the limbs - I've been using spear and hammer dwarves lately, so no unattached limbs in my fort).
You can set it in the standing orders{o} so that all "other" body parts get automatically set for dumping, but it'll get rid of ivory/tooths as well, which might be a problem if you're a conneseur of tooth decorations.

I have a bunch of tame animals that died of old age, their corpses are unbutcherable and never decay into individual parts. If an animal dies of causes other than combat, their corpse may not be usable.

Tame animals which die from any cause other than being deliberately slaughtered at a butcher's shop are unusable.  This means tame animals which die from old age, combat, or unfortunate accidents can't be used for meat or bones.

Wild animals which die from any cause can be butchered and used for meat and bones no matter how they die.

What happens if you toss a tame animal carcass off a 20 z-level cliff? It should explode when it hits the bottom. Are the bits from the exploded corpse usable?

That's why you cage the kittens and slaughter them when they are grown. Cats have bones.

To deal with your stockpile filling with hair and things, you could do what I did and add the [SHELL] tag to all of the useless body parts, the vanilla shell items in DF are a pretty wide range of things (bone with turtles, chitin with cave lobsters, and rock with bivalves) so adding the [SHELL] tag to things like horns and hooves makes a lot of sense to me even though they aren't technically 'shells'. Adding it to hair makes for some odd artifacts though, but then aren't most artifacts pretty odd?

Or you could mod in the "crematorioum" custom workshop, to turn the stuff into ash. I'm pretty sure it's there somewhere on the forums.
The point is, it can't be easily dealt with, without using mods.

Aw, poor kittens! This reminds me to much of Bonsai Kittens. I let mine roam. Crazy cat dwarf syndrome is amusing.
