On a contrary. They're the descendands of Celts(stonehenge megaconstuction) and Romans(aqueducts), living in a largely mountainous region, with a history of massive coal and iron minig and smelting industries, as well as slate quarrying and coal mining.
See, they actually ARE the dwarves.

Well DF is a good game and has received quite a lot of exposure from the largest Finnish magazine about computers and entertainment electronics; MBnet, including mentions both on their website (where DF has featured as game of the day on several occasions) and in the magazine proper (where it's described in the latest issue as, and I translate here, "probably the best game ever").

Havnt seen DF in any Dutch media at all though (not that I read a lot of magazines...). Might be one of the reasons we are unrepresented on the OPs list. Guess I need to reel in some converts.

Be careful, you're mixing your excessively violent and suicidally bleak gaming settings.  In DF, it's 7 alcoholic squats against an unforgiving world, psychotic clowns and an uncaring and fickle player.  In 40K, it's uncounted billions with an unforgiving and uncaring god-emperor (well, mostly his priests and bureaucrats) against psychotic and fickle xenos, heretics and traitors.  Granted, the characters are doomed in both settings, but you need to keep the wild-eyed zealotry in the correct game...

Actually, I find this very interesting... especially since this game is only released in English, but English-speakers are only third most popular.

I know that European gamemakers have very different views on gamemaking philosophy, especially in the board game market.  I wonder if there's something about the Finns socially that attracts them to this kind of gameplay far more than even the nation (and language) this game was built in?
