I've got to recommend Visions and Voices, an excellent exploration focused RPGmaker RPG. I really enjoy it, but it's probably not for everyone. The music is great in any case, though.

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

Eversion - Fun little platformer.
Doom the Roguelike - RL version of Doom, very short and simple.
SubTerra - Really hard puzzle game.
Alien Swarm - Top-down shooter free on Steam.
Everything on this site really - Jumper games and stuff.
MUGEN - Customizable fighting game.
Rogue Survivor - Survive from the zombies.
Mushroom Kingdom Fusion - I don't know.

http://www.liero.be/

A very old game, if i remember correct. It's worms in realtime, with massive use of ninjarope. Play it with a friend, it's the best Hotseat game ever.

Another hotseat game. You control an army of little dots to fight your friends armys. Just try it, it's fun.

Lol, I remember liero. It's a great game to play multiplayer, though it gets repetitive after a few months :P

Shores of Herezon is pretty good. The server is down as of this post though, so wait a day or so to let them fix that issue. And it's buggy, but hey, we all play DF.
Not free. Just open beta. Will be subscription-based when it's done.
heard them say one night in-game it would likely be $10

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Hidden Source 4b is my favorite free game, bar none. It's a source mod. Hasn't seen real activity in a year, unfortunately.

do source mods really count though? I mean you do have to buy a game for that... (BTW does it have to be a specific game?)

As for a free game I liked: Spirit engine 2 is free and very awesome. (and 1, ofcourse, but that was always free).

L4D, L4D2, I think Portal might count, which they had for free at one point.

Only the paid version works, the free one doesn't

CS: Source is usually your best bet, since mods for everything exclusively require it. Half Life 2 often does not do and all the textures will be purple.

I could've sworn I'd read about some mods that specifically state they require HL2...?  :-\

Either way, if you're interested in a Source mod, double- and triple-check the relevant forums, manuals, etc. to make sure that you know what base game(s) are required. (I definitively remember reading about one mod that used textures from two different Source games, and as such needed both... I just can't remember the name of the mod, and I only remember that CS:S was one of the games, so it doesn't exactly help my point much.  :P )

In case of Hidden HL2:Deathmatch is enough. There is always 1-3 full servers so i wouldn't say is dead.
