Oh yeah, and let me add Hedgewars, if you're a fan of Worms.

Well, I may as well come out here and say it.

Cave Story.

Carebear beat me to Iji.  Let me add Cave Story and An Untitled Story to that.  An Untitled Story in particular is really awesome, it's probably my favorite of the free games that resemble metroidvanias.  Also, Within a Deep Forest, and Knytt Stories (both Nifflas games) are quite good.

A FOSS list.
A grand list o'roguelikes.
A second big honkin' list o'free (mostly) ones.
Probably one of the larger flash sites.

Plenty to see. Plenty of hours and hours of things to do.

Also abandonware, but most of it's technically illegal, so meh. And emulation, but it's only legal in a specific situation, so meh th'two.

If it's not somewhere in those, I'll nominate Warzone 2100 for your attention. It is an RTS made of win and awesome (and artillery).

a few free games that are so good that i actually play regularly :
Of course Dwarf Fortress followed by

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup , the tile version is just fantastic.
OpenTDD, the concept has been aging very well.
Orbiter, my favorite simulator, a sandbox the size of the solar system.
WinSP:MBT, wargamer heaven
YSFlight2000, a mix of realism+arcade+sandbox feel makes this so great.

Glest free and open source 3D RTS with cross platform multiplayer support  - check the MegaGlest thread for the latest MP beta client. LUA scripts are available for mini-campaign mode.

Maps and tilesets are here and faction units here

Current client build offers improved particle rendering, eight player multiplayer/coop, some good 8 player maps, custom faction units and tilesets.

Don't forget  Byond @ http://www.byond.com/games/?sort=pop has quite a few decent games, some are single player, while most are multi-player. The game Dungeon Master under RPG reminds me a little of Dwarf Fortress, except you have to micromanage A LOT which is its only downside.

Someone already posted Cave Story, so I gotta say Digital: A Love Story.

Or Spelunky.

Or Hydorah.

Or La-Mulana.

Try Widelands, an open-source Settlers II clone, that's at least as good as Settlers II, if not better.

Battleships Forever, asshole community(or so I've heard), but the game itself, which is mostly a shipmaking sandbox, is great.

Whatever the hell this is. Some kind of Gundam-like game, or something(and yes there is an english version). It's awesome, but the mode where two battleships face off against each other lags hard even on my high-end comp(an awesome mode otherwise).

Noctis IV. Space exploration sim. The music that plays with the manual open works very well with the game, too. Excellent screenshot opportunities.
