Checking on something...
« on: August 11, 2010, 12:52:46 am »

Wanted to make sure with others - given the current bug that makes it so room designations aren't respected, has anyone heard of any use for dormitory?  Currently, I don't see any difference between a dormitory and randomly placed beds, since dwarves simply sleep wherever the hell they want, whether it be a peasant in the king's bedroom or the king on the bodily-fluid stained bed of a prostitute.

seems that way. Only workaround i got- is designating each dorf his own bed, but still some choose to sleep anywhere they want. Bunch of hobos...

A dormitory gives them the negative thought of "having slept without a proper room recently". Sleeping in another one's bed doesn't give that thought; instead, they get good thoughts from sleeping in other people's exquisite bedrooms. So, I would avoid dormitories and just build a couple nice bedrooms for some of the dwarves instead. They don't ever sleep all at once, so you should do fine.

If it really bothers you, you can use extremely intricate burrows to ensure each dwarf has access only to his own bed.

I like the idea of dormitories though.  small but liberally scattered around.  I guess I'll just have to build some cages with lovely creatures or some awesome statues in each one.

In my current fortress I create one large room with a few hundred beds in it, with overlapping rooms designated from each bed and assigned to each dwarf.  This way no matter which bed a dwarf chooses to sleep in he's still counted as sleeping in his own bedrooms.  This still doesn't stop them from randomly sleeping in the beds in the hospital, and my baroness still gets upset about lesser dwarves having bedrooms as nice as hers.
