oh god my arms!
« on: August 11, 2010, 12:39:57 am »

Funny story.
So... new fort, I don't even have 15 dwarfs and some gators are chasing around my plant gathers so I take a quick look at my inventory. I've got enough weapons and armor to suit one dwarf but no gauntlets. No big deal right? (but I think you all ready see where this is going) So, I send Urist McMilitary dwarf out to chop up some gators. The combat log gets 3 entries.
Gator bites Urist in the right hand
Gator bites Urist in the left hand
Gator bites Urist in the face (you know because every where else has armor now)

Urist McStump now has no lower arms and hands bringing me to my question - Is there anything that a dwarf with no arms can do? I was thinking of just setting him as a noble but I've really got no idea how no arms would effect those kinds of duties.

I think that you are now required to test this.

On behalf of the DF community, I hereby request that you determine exactly what an armless dwarf CAN and CANNOT do. It's for science!

Well, so far I know that he can't do anything that requires moving an object from one location to another. He is also unable to clean

I have a doctor with severed nerves in both arms, but nobody has gotten injured since he got out of the hospital so I'm not sure which healthcare tasks need hands to use.

'kay, so i wasted about twelve dorfs, getting one without arms. So as long as i tested, he cannot move anything, but surprisingly, he can clean himself. Tested this twice. Got him in the messy bloody room, he was spattered alright. Then he moves to the murky pool and cleans himself.
Also he could gather crops, but couldn't move them. I guess he just bites plump helmets off the ground.
And he made rock crafts with the rock, that was left lying in the workshop.
He CAN fight by the way, by biting and kicking opponents. Not too helpful, as he cannot wear anything else, that already was on him.
He cannot pick it up-> he cannot wear it. He cannot wear armor-> he is useless in serious battle. Can bite groundhog to death though.
Tested screw pumps, he never tried to do it. No error or cancel messages. I guess you have to have arms in order to screw pump.
Next thing i try is to get a dwarf without arms, teeth, and legs. See if he can fight.

i had high hopes for my militia commander.  Then the first ambush happened.  3 squads of goblins each led by an elite human crossbowman.  my commander lost both his hands before being stitched back together in the hospital.  I wondered if he could keep teaching military classes since he had some good skills.  I don't have that fort anymore though.  See what kind of military training he will do.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

How does is a screw pump operated exactly? Is there a crank you use to rotate a wheel to make the screw turn? Or some kind of piston mechanism that can be pumped up and down? Maybe they should modify the pump so that it can be operated with your feet. Something like a bicycle, which you could pedal. :P

well, dorfs can connect objects half across the map, using only two parts of the mechanisms, so why not bicycle?)

what I wonder now is how important the arms are versus hands. Can a handless dwarf do things an armless one can't?

I wonder if he could fish (leaving the fish where he caught it).  If so, he might make a very effective fisherman, not having to walk back to the fort for every catch.

I'm very disappointed that I'm the only one who gave a monty python reference to this thus far.  I suggest you rename him Black Knight.

I wonder if he could be a doctor - like the nurse on South Park?  At the very least, he ought to be able to diagnose.

He should be able to wrestle, so it's a good idea to make him a soldier! .. but since he can't wash himself I suggest he renames him "Dirt Knight"

Keep him around long enough so that he gets a strange mood. If old versions are any indication (i.e. if Toady didn't make dwarves lacking the ability to grasp ineligible for moods), his strange mood should immediately cancel due to "Too injured" and result in instant insanity.

"Urist cancels Rest: Taken by mood"
"Urist is taken by a fey mood!"
(press space)
"Urist cancels Strange Mood: Too injured"
"Urist has gone berserk!"
(press space, have Fun)

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
