This game needs Thermite.
« on: August 10, 2010, 11:00:39 pm »

Just think of what could happen with something that can melt through solid rock, and can be handled by dwarves. Just think of dumping the powder on intruders, them wondering what it's all about, and lighting them on fire, only for them to melt completely...

Did you just watch mythbusters because I swear they just used it. But to the post, that would be awesome, imagine the Fun the could happen with it though. It would be fairly awesome.

hmm.. could work with low ignition point, high boiling point and low spec heat. im not 100% sure, though.

Ah, Mythbusters, one of the few shows on tv I actually like. Just got done watching the episode where they blew up or rather melted a car with a 1000 pounds of thermite about 15 minutes ago.

I've wondered what would happen if you modified a sandblaster to expel and then light thermite. It could be the ultimate flamethrower. but I just right this second realized that it doesn't need oxygen to burn and would probably run back up the barrel and melt you.

As far as I know, the only material in the game that can withstand the heat of thermite is adamantine.

Maybe it could be a nasty vein that spits out burning dust when mined?

My chemistry teacher so wanted to do something with Thermite last year... Unfortunately, it's against the law to have a bunch of high school kids playing with thermite.

Just imagine the results...
Student 1 has eye burned out by chemical reaction!
Student 1 gives into pain!
Student 1 has a melted eye!
Eye goo seeps into Student 1's brain, causing mass hemorrhaging and intense diahrrea!
Student 2 latches onto Thermite sample!
Student 2 shoves Thermite sample into Student 3's scapula!
Student 3's scapula catches fire!
Police latch onto Chemistry teacher!
Chemistry teacher fights back with his tesla coil!
Chemistry teacher is tazed!
Chemistry teacher gives into pain!

But thermite itself isn't illegal, he could do demonstrations...

On topic: Thermite is made using pretty much rust and commonly aluminum. so possibly have it crafted?

The dwarfs have the gear to make thermite, lighting it is the hard bit, it requires stupidly high temps to ignite.  It is also one of the nasty and unforgiving substances you will ever see if something goes wrong, very dwarfy

End with a Bang is good, but not as good as Thermite vs. Ice, which I was watching earlier this evening.

But yes, Dwarf Fortress needs more ways to set the world on fire.

Indeed. I never thought Ice, of all things could go BOOM!

If you got a bunch of ice with above your thermite when you light it, it pretty much aerosols. Hence, boomy.
