Sometime last year (fortress time) a goblin master thief got into my fortress, bypassing the traps I set up (expected) and managing to slip past the pair of chained wardogs I had beyond that (unexpected.) The thief tried to steal a dwarven baby off its mother's breast while she was working at the forge. The thief attempted to stike the mother with her large dagger to make good its escape, but ended up hitting the baby instead, lopping off its lower left leg before stuffing it in a bag and making a run for it. Fortunately, a dwarven caravan was currently in the trade depot with several armed guards, and there is no way out of the fortress but through the depot. As you might imagine, the thief met a quick end there and the baby was recovered.
The baby survived and is now a child, though its ability to stand was lost. It lies in its mother's bed, having food and water brought to it. However, other than its missing a part of a leg, it is completely healthy, and there is no reason why it could not still grow into a healthy and productive member of the fortress if it can be assigned a crutch. Unfortunately, no crutch has been assigned.
Is there some trick to assigning crutches? We have a couple of them in a finished goods stockpile, and we have a well equpped hospital zone and chief medical dwarf. How can I get this child the crutch it needs?
