Is my dwarfly megaproject possible?
« on: August 09, 2010, 10:23:49 am »

I have a megaproject idea to replace the sea with magma by pumping out the water and then after the water is pumped replacing it with magma,is it possible and if so how much time do you think it will take?(Real life time not DF time, you know like 3 real world weeks etc.

don't drain the ocean its one of those things that is practically infinite, and the water has to go somewhere so it will either flow back into the ocean or flood the land entirely.

This pure mountain spring water is indispensable. Literally. I'm out of paper cups.

i am not sure how you would wall off the ocean parts i always thought it is to hard to pump water out and build a wall.

If your plan is to replace the sea with magma then you have the nice option of walling off the edges of the sea by turning them into obsidian.  I'd build magma pipes out to the map edge to spread the obsidian out where it would be needed most.  Maybe you should leave just a corner of ocean as it is in case there is some kind of drainage problem with the map edge.  Never having replaced the ocean with magma I couldn't say if there would be an issue or what, but if you really want to annihilate the entire ocean it might also be possible to use an aquifer or the cavern lakes as drainage as well.

In any case, once the map edge is obsidianized it can act as a caldera.  Pump out the remaining ocean into whatever you've decided to use as your drainage and let the ocean bed dry up.  While the ocean is dry, maybe you should construct a tower in the middle with a tunnel leading deep into the earth?  Certainly sounds like fun!  The final step should be easy if you've already gotten magma pipes running out to the map edge, just redirect those pipes a few tiles inwards so they fill where the magma ocean is supposed to be.

Here is a thread of someone draining the ocean. So it's possible. When you start filling it with magma, the incoming water will become obsidian,  blocking the path of more incoming water.

Make a massive atom smashing array to destroy the ocean bit by bit, or get it all to flow into a chasm.
