700 a day is probably mostly unhealthy people who already have breathing problems. Some people who die naturally might be included. And it's still early in the crisis, there's bound to be people who just didn't know you should wear a mask during a smog and there's people who are just too plain stubborn/stupid to wear one.

Aye, smog used to kill dozens of people in London on particularly bad days, so compounded with a fire, I don't see the 700-a-day figure as that outlandish, especially considering Moscow's population density.

Haven't been able to find a non-AP writeup to compare. Looking at some of the pictures and video I've found...I can halfway believe it. That shit looks BAD. Makes Beijing in summer look like Lake Tahoe by comparison.

Plus, 550 forest fires with 40 alone near Moscow? Yikes.

In all honesty this is bad, but probably most deaths are from the homeless or poor.

They should try bombing the fires. It'll suck all the air out and smother the fire. It isn't like anyone's alive inside the kind of inferno that creates smoke clouds that large.

Only the last method seems to be working very well.


In all seriousness, I assume the typical "douse it with shitloads of water" and "dig/burn clear zones around the fires". I know people are getting pissed that the government hasn't been able to get control of it.
