(40d) Adamantine woes
« on: August 09, 2010, 05:52:54 am »

I have a slight problem with my latest fort. Imagine it, Year 201 and I just embarked on my first mountainous fort and I'm digging out the central staircase for my dwarves when, on z-13, we strike adamantine! In fact the adamantine crosses directly across the staircase. (I do mine out three tiles after making sure there is no unrevealed area next to them) Wonderful except for the facts that:
A) This is Mid-Spring
B) I have never had a fort that got past 30-50 dwarves
C) This is my first experience with adamantine ever.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Prepare a bunch of exquisite rooms for your king who will be approaching soon. Since your newbie dwarves won't produce quality furniture or engravings, make it exquisite by size. 11x11 tile wide rooms should be sufficient, as long as you don't just dig out these rooms in the muddy soil. Dig them out of rock layers, then smooth the stone.

He will want a bedroom, a dining room, a throne room and a mausoleum.

He will also have some unique views about how many chests and cabinets he needs, but you can resupply him with more of these later on as well.

The king or queen will arrive without the bunch of useless baggage they normally would arrive with - no consort, no other noble pests. Just the king, dressed as a peasant but still as useless and noble as always.

I found my peasant-kings always quite easy to handle. They did hang around in the meeting hall and were very fond of dragging captured goblins around from their cages into the deep pit where they were thrown into. They also never made any demands or mandates.

But I would stay clear of the Adamantinum veins for now, as you probably don't really want to unleash the hidden fun stuff so early.

Thank you very much. I guess I will continue like its just microcline then. :P

EDIT: Was following the sides of adamantine vein to outline it. Careless designations opened HFS.  The bottom level to be precise.  I had my miner drop what he was doing so he would make a wall to block them out.  After I walled it off I realized that his pick was on the other side (I made him stop being a miner to build the wall) and there was open space between the ledge that the pick was on and the pit.  i opened the wall and found out demons could fly.

You are lucky.  I just figured out after savescumming that it wasnt careless digging, the microcline cluster I was digging through was part of the wall holding back the demons.

Just tested and all microcline on the map behaves as adamantium. Bug maybe? Never happened on any of my forts before.

EDIT: New question: If I use a cave-in to plug HFS then if i mine it out is it still HFS?

Well, if all your microcline can be used as adamantine, then it's time to try out if adamantine trousers last longer than those made out of pig tails, I'd say. ;)

O.O

Seriously? if so, you must try to recreate this! And give us the seed/map generation parameters!

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

In my last fort I hit adamantine in the firet summer, them mined out a few thousand adamantine ore without so much as the distant titter of a clown before I succumbed to framerate death.

Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.

More testing ensued and it turns out that no other embark location in this world works and DF crashes whenever I try to reclaim.  I guess it's just a random fluke.
