Death by Mood
« on: August 09, 2010, 04:13:52 am »

I'm having a problem where when a dwarf is possessed they don't seem to get what they're asking for even though I've got plenty of it.
Twice now in a game that I just started possessed dwarfs died while it seemed as I have what they need. The first time I'd thought that when he was saying "cloth... thread " that perhaps he had died because I didn't have any silk cloth but I had plant cloth. This time I've a dwarf asking for "bones... yes, blocks... bricks,  tree... life, leather... skin." He went and grabbed some bones and is now just sitting around waiting to die. I have plenty of blocks of random types, I even went and made a few blocks out of metal just to make sure he had everything available. I've got half a forest sitting in my stock piles and more leather than I know what to do with.

Any suggestions?

If the moody dwarf is just sitting at his claimed shop you can see what he's looking for by pressing q and placing the cursor over the work shop. If he's just standing around and hasn't claimed a shop then likely you don't have the one he's looking for.

If he wants silk, then he won't settle for Plant Fibre, correct. Any type of silk cloth will be acceptable, though.

Did you try Glass blocks? Wooden blocks?

Fey dwarves output quite straightforward messages on what they want. Possessed and secretive dwarves have more cryptic ones. You can try to figure it out yourself or look for some spoilers.

Butcher a large animal.

Has anyone else noticed that Kittens have no bones? Beats me how the little buggers stand up...

Just a note, if he's asking for cloth and you have lots of it but he won't get any, it's probably been claimed by the hospital. You can deactivate your hospital briefly to free up the materials in storage there for other uses.

"Cloth...thread" doesn't mean cloth.

If moods are giving you a very hard time, try checking the wiki page on moods.

Wrong - moody dwarves never ask for unwoven thread, only cloth. Possessed dwarves just happen to say "cloth...thread" when they want either plant fiber cloth or silk cloth.

When a dwarf wants blocks, they almost certainly have to be made of stone.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'm getting kind of scared.  Got a possessed Dwarf in my fort right now.

bones... yes...
bars... metal...

I've slaughtered every spare animal I had.  He grabbed some bones each time.
I've smelted bronze bars and am about to smelt gold.  The only metals I have.  He's not touched the bronze.

Does he need more bones?  Does he need a specific metal I don't have?  Because he's a hop, skip, and a jump from the entrance flood levers...

How many stacks of bones has he collected (use [t] to check the contents of the workshop)?

Does he like a particular metal (listed in his Thoughts and Preferences screen), and do you have some of it?

Don't get scared.  Build a wall around him.  Once he's dead, tear down the wall and bury him.
