dangerous river fish?
« on: August 09, 2010, 01:51:32 am »

I'm embarking on a nice site with a beautiful waterfall, but this will be my first embark on a river or stream and not a brook since playing 40d.  My question is, are there still dangerous killer river fish to watch out for in my streams?  a quick unit list check has confirmed sturgeon, longnose gar, and pike.  I'm concerned because my wagon is directly next to the stream.

You should be fine.

Unless they're undead fish. In which case you're screwed.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Oh shit, there are sturgeons in the river?

Get out of there as fast as you can and never again go near the river. It's for your own good.

I thought Bluefin Tuna were the only dangerous fish now.

In arena, I saw one kill 6 carp and 2 sharks. AT THE SAME TIME.

The problem isn't that their stats are any good, it's that your dwarves try and fight them, dodge into the water, and then get slowly nibbled to death while drowning.

Bluefin Tuna are dangerous because of their sheer size - they're bigger than your dwarves. And Sturgeions are even bigger. They've been axe murderers ever since 40d, I don't think that's changed in 31.x.

All he needs to do, is channel a few tiles next to the river, so that the dodgy dwarves can easily escape drowning via ramps. Maybe restrict fishing and drinking to where the ramps are.

Good idea, as long as his channelers survive proximity to the deathfish.

That is a sturgeon. They are the vengeance of Poseidon.

They probably will eventually pull your dwarves in if they fish long enough.  Also a few things sea lampray is huge leach, carp is the jumping killer fish, and turtles are the only thing you should go near rivers for as they are amazingly not dangerous.

I've gotten my dwarves to fish successfully from a room I've built around a waterfall, 2 z levels from the water's surface.  With zone-only fishing and drinking it should be safe.  I'd had a few interruptions by longnose gar on the banks of the river, but no injuries.

If the river is not to large try making it passble to close it off that way you can airdrown all the fish and eat them. This is both good because it kills off dangerous creatures and it gives you food.
