Framsticks: 3D Artificial Life
« on: August 08, 2010, 01:13:11 am »

Lately I've been toying with Framsticks, an Alife simulator that is pretty awesome. You (or someone else) can create programs and behaviors for the sticky creatures to follow, and follow they will. Some examples include fishes that fight other fishes, and die when they don't eat enough...and some plain cool creatures that just walk around. Take a look, and feel free to post your creatures in this thread!

I would like to make one scorpion like and one snake like creature and let them fight to death. Is it complicated?

Quinnr, secretly an add bot?
Perhaps.

Anyway, after browsing around the site, y'know to see if it wasn't some overly complex murder simulator [teehee], and something I could actually do.
But I found nothing!

How simple/complex is the creature creator then?

So... what is that you've posted in the OP? Is he, uh, a dead stickman or something?

Those kind of "games" tend to be boring in the long term, unless you enjoy scripting behavior things for the bots. Which most of the time is hard.

I think it's a lizard.
I think it's a simple '4-legged walker'. It chases after little energy orbs.

The creature creator can be hard to get at first...you have to type in the creatures with some weird things I don't remember the name. (FAKEDIT: Genotypes). So you can type 'X' for a line. 'X(X,,X)' would make a weird branching thing..you have to play around a bit...you can add things to the end like sensors and muscles as well.

You can then either control muscles and things directly with the brain probe..or make them a brain to do it themselves.
One nice example of sensors in the tutorial is creatures that sit in place and 'talk' using lights. They flash at each other, and respond with their own lights.

There is tons more you can do with them, such as evolution and scripting. A nice getting started guide is here: http://www.framsticks.com/common/tutorial/index.html

Now we must make smilieys with legs. Too bad there isn't magma...maybe I can pretend that the water is magma. Moo-ha-ha.

I like how in the screenshots the creatures explode violently when they smack into each other.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.
