Technical question
« on: August 07, 2010, 05:38:55 pm »

Hi everybody, I'm new.

I tried downloading the game, then when the folder opened, I tried to extract all the files, and it told me there were no files to extract. Then when I redownloaded and tried again, it told me it couldn't find fmod.dll.

This game looks fun, can I get a hand figuring out how to get it to work?

Are you running windows?

If so, you should be downloading this version.

You just need to extract it with winzip or 7zip or winrar and put it into a folder, and it should run fine.

Okay, I've just gotten a new computer after the last one died, and I'm trying to re-download Dwarf Fortress. Here's what weird: Every time I try downloading (even BoxOfAids' link) the computer insists on trying to open it with Microsoft Word, which obviously fails, because the file is unreadable. The icon of the downloaded file also is that of a Word document. What the Heck?

When you click on the link make sure you are are saving the file, not trying to open it.

As for the Word document thing... I don't know, make sure the file extension is .zip

Once you have saved it to your hard drive, right click on the zip file to extract it.

I hope this helps.

Hmmm, didn't seem to work. I figured out I can open the file with other programs though. What should I use?

You probably need something to unzip it with, such as winRAR.

Are you sure the file you downloaded is a .zip file? If so, I'm kind of confused, since Windows *comes* with zip-decompression utilities built-in. Maybe filetype assocations got screwed up. If so, right click (or shift-right-click if necessary) and click "Open With" to open it with a zip/compression program.

Ya, it's definitely a zip file. This is a really stupid problem to have. Ah well, I'm getting a new laptop for college pretty soon (This one is my Dad's old one, he probably messed with the settings or something), so I'll wait and try again on that one.

Easiest way would be to download of the hundreds of free decompression programs out there (like tugzip) and tell it to take over .zip file associations. There is a way to restore it to use the default windows one but only way I know is to edit the registry which I wouldn't recommend unless the first option won't work.

You can edit filetype associations in folder options, or through the "Open With" dialogue box.
