How does armor system work?
« on: August 07, 2010, 09:54:29 am »

So, my soldier-dwarfs are able to equip several parts of armor/clothes/leather at the same time.

Does having mail shirt, breastplate, leather armor, robe, vest and cloack + 3 pairs of shoes and 3 pairs of trousers differs somehow from having 1 piece of each ?

I'm asking mainly because quite often my soldiers - especially those on duty - are picking up newly produced equipment just to get one extra sock or mitten (even though they already have iron gauntlets and gloves).

Yes every addition layer of armor makes them stronger. However "real" armor is more effective in compersison to the "space" it takes on a dwarf. Any dwarf can only cary a certain amout of armor so these shoes take in place that could have been taken by for example a steel breastplate.

I believe that the pieces of armor and how many layers can be put on are specific to location so things like shoes wont affect how many gloves you have on....shoes affect the lower leg (shoes, low boots, and high boots only)

here is the specific description from the wiki...perhaps scan the armor section some to understand it better

Be that as it may, I still have major problems equipping multiple pieces of armor of the same type on dwarves. For example, my dwarves CAN wear more than one mailshirt, but doing so seems to make them very prone to switching one of them out for anything in the bins. Like permanentally switching it out.

Yeah thats why I keep it simple....that whole thing feels like a bug/exploit type thing....just one of everything for me...I don't even put mail under plate (even though that is realistic and something that was done) simply to avoid bugs

One shirt and one breastplate gives me no problems. Breastplate covers less, anyway.

Wiki says that this:

Is the most armor points possible on 1 dwarf. Bugs say otherwise, though.

and thats why I don't fiddle with it to much...id rather spend time on my fort and making it better than playing with bugs to make them (hopefully) work in my favor >.>

Goddamnt, my squads can't even defend one burrow for a month, they constantly go to "Pickup Equipment", every single time.

What should I do? Only one armor per body part?

Yeah, except "chest" ("armor" on military screen) which can have a shirt and a breastplate.

Does it matter if "breastplate" or "mail shirt" is higher on the uniform list?  Or will they figure it out on their own?

I always go with mail shirt, breastplate, cap, helm, gauntlets, greaves, boots, shield. Haven't seen any problems with that.

I don't think it matters, but I always take breastplate "before". It might have no bearing whatsoever, it's just a habit.

Since we're on the topic of armor in this thread I thought I'd as an armor related question.

How do bone and wooden bolts work in this new armor system?  Since the weapon needs to be one metal tier higher than the armor its hitting to penetrate does this mean wooden/bone arrows are all but useless for anything but hunting or do they still have a use for shooting at goblins with?
