Anyways, there where a bunch of guns that had magazines on the top during ww2, including the Bren, that Australian one, the one from the land of anime girls with tentacles and giant robots The Emperor... Now there are a few more of them... And hey, its not as weird as the gun that shoots in two directions at once, right?

The Madsen was actually used before that, in WWI. Like I said, it was the first real LMG.
