miner drops pick during combat
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:29:26 am »

When I order my miner to attack a nearby troglodyte, he drops his pick somewhere safe before going into the fray trying to wrestle the creature to death. When I order my woodcutter to chop down some harpies, he throws his axe aside before attempting to grab onto their feathers.

I cannot equip the pick/axe to the respectful dwarves since they are already holding onto them, but when combat ensues, they just drop their weapons.
Any way around this other than NOT having them fight in the militia?

I think it has something to do with the uniform, did you asign them to 'no uniform'? Because since that dosen't allow for a weapon they will drop it, to solve this make a new uniform and add the weapon item 'weapon of choice'.
Just PM if you want me to make a guide, although you should be able to figure it out.

I am seeing this with woodcutters.
When activated, he gets the axe from the storage room, exits the storage room, takes 2 steps, and drops the axe on the ground.

It appears to be related to the fact he is a woodcutter, since I don't see this when dealing with axedwarves whom aren't playing woodchopper with their axes.

I got something weird recently that might be related.

I had a dwarf become posessed and everyone were too busy hauling things to build him a workshop.. besides alot of the dwarves didn't have the proper jobs enabled. So I chose a miner and enabled almost everything (not woodcutting) and the first thing he does is walk into a stockpile and throw his pick away. then he went to engrave walls. "oops" i disable that one - and he goes back to fetch the pick before building workshops.

What was that about anyway? .. I also have soldiers who take their greaves off after their shift. For some reason it's usually the greaves! .. they put them in a stockpile and the next time i check they've got greaves on again.. and I keep finding piles of thrown-away clothes a little here and there. I have no idea what's going on.

It seems like a pick can be designated for one dorf's civilian or military use but not both, so Urist McRecruit says oh thats my mining pick I'm not allowed to fight with it.

Yes, this. It seems that we just can't use our miner's / woodcutters as a fast armed response team anymore in the new versions.

Yep they seam to swap the military equipement and civilian ones even if it could be the same, its also for hunters and i guess for all civilian work that need a peice of equipement.

Maybe you can try to give your miner to equip a specific pick (the one he use when mining) when in military duty, and see if he still go drop it to take it back when swaping soldier/civilian jobs, maybe he won't go to the stockpile.
