18th Granite 53Turns out that there was some valuable stone in the area being cleared out to drain the magma, so I rounded up some of the dwarfs lounging about in the communal area and sent them to get it all out before the place is filled with magma. With them out the way, I had a couple of the masons knock up a couple of tables and chairs and put them in there, so we can actually have somewhere to eat.
With less stock to take now, and now with a new year here, I've decided to get proper stock taking done, so the miners are mining out another area for this, and other future offices.
1st Felsite 53Nineteen more dwarfs appeared over the horizon today. A surprisingly useful lot, actually, once I got talking to them, and those that aren't will likely get drafted once we get a fortress military going. Thirthy-five of us now, so we might be getting somewhere. Hopefully we'll manage to please the Queen, as she clearly isn't forgetting about us, as I'd somewhat hoped.
Even one of the cheesemakers was useful, thankfully, as he admitted to knowing a little about keeping records and I shoved him into his new office.
10th Felsite 53A couple of days ago, one of the new ones got possessed by some meandering spirit, or something. Not really my area of expertise, but once he'd gathered a few things up and got to work in the craftdwarf's workshop and made a sphalerite scepter. Soundsun the Incidental Phrase, or something, he called it. It looks a bit weird, and well made, but I doubt it's worth very much. I patted him on the back and smiled, but he didn't seem to remember the whole event anyway.
15th Felsite 53Oh damn. The Elves have been seen coming down the hill. They probably want to trade, but with the disaster, we don't have much to offer them. I doubt they have anything we want anyway. Hopefully they won't fuss over the trees too much.
On a more positive note, we've started to drain the magma, so hopefully we can get back to metalsmithing, something properly dwarfish, soon enough.
2nd Malachite 53I was walking around the main the corridor today, when I came on a horrifying site. The A trail of blood lead from the stairs down to the draining area, around the corner. When I went to look, I saw a dwarf had collapsed, his feet and lower legs heavily burnt and bleeding. It seems that, with the magma levels a little lower and gone in most places, he'd decided to see if he could retrieve some of the things inside the forge area. Apparently, there was enough of the magma to still catch him by surprise.
The worst past is that this happened to another dwarf and a puppy, who I can only assume was following him. I don't much care for dogs, other than for eating, so I don't really care about that, and if these new immigrants are that stupid then I don't need them. At least the magma is mostly gone, though cracking the door revealed that the room is full to the brim of smoke that doesn't seem to be thinning.
I've ordered a proper funeral area to be dug out, for now, so that those who've died under my command can be treated with respect. Even the idiots.
10th Galena 53So, it turns out the reason that the smoke isn't thinning is because the coke supplies are on fire. I should have figured that out sooner, as dipping things in magma will tend to do that. Rather than waiting for it to burn itself out, or having to dig out an entire new trench for the magma, I'm going to try to put it out. The river runs right above, so I'm going to let a little of the water in with a floodgate.
15th Galena 53A human caravan has arrived, though as much with the elves, we don't have much to offer them. Speaking of the elves, one of them has been following me around, looking like he wants a little attention. Hopefully if I just keep ignoring him, he'll go away.
26th Galena 53Over the last few days, we have seen two goblin snatchers and a kobold thief. We need a military before they get more aggressive, though they've all chased off safely enough for now. Unfortunately, while we have the manpower, we don't have the weapons or armour until this issue with the magma is fully resolved. I hope I haven't doomed this fortress to an undefended slaughter.
9th Limestone 53The coffins have been finished, and all the bodies interred. However, I'm a little worried by our mason. We've had three death, or four if you count the puppy, but he's produced... a lot more coffins than that. I'll have to have a chat with him, as this kind of negativity could be bad for the whole fort.
18th Limestone 53I gave in today, and finally spoke to the Elf. He clearly was not getting the message, or perhaps was just banking on me breaking down eventually. He wanted us to only cut down a hundred trees, and frankly I didn't like his tone, but I managed to negotiate up to 130. We're not going to cut down even a hundred in the next year with our wood stocks as they are, but that's not really the point, is it?
With him done, the human representative stopped by say hello, but didn't have anything of substance to say.
Oh, and it seems that spirit is back, as another one of the newer immigrants was possessed and hurried off the craftdwarfs workshop to start furiously putting something together.
Finally, on an actually positive note, the fire dousing has been a success, so when the warmth of the magma has evaporated the water, we can start out metal working once more! This mistake of mine has cost us three lives and almost a year, but we might finally be getting back on track.
20th Limestone 53It turns out what the cook was making was a limonite ring. Again, not worth a huge amount, but a little better than that scepter we've kept firmly in the dark recesses of the goods storage. When the dwarf came around, I think he was mostly just confused, though he remembered the name: Bitevandal the Gear of Adoration. It's all damned strange if you ask me.
2nd Sandstone 53With the metal smithing still not operational, and pig tails in season, I've decided we should expand our horizons and start making clothes. As such, I've ordered construction of the necessary things for this industry, and hopefully it'll mean we have new things to wear and sell to traders.
6th Sandstone 53Praise Armok, at long last the metal industry is back. The water is gone, new holes into the magma have been dug, and the furnaces and smelters have been reconstructed. I've got a bunch of lads furiously working on steel and electrum, making crafts, weapons and armour.
22nd Sandstone 53We've only really got one dwarf with military experience, so I set him in charge and got him to pick five others to be the first of our military. The first of the weapons are starting to be made, so they'll even have equipment soon. The barracks is right next to the entrance too, so they'll be there when any invaders first try to come in. I feel a little safer already.
19th Timber 53The dwarfs are here, and though the electrum crafts a little slow to be produced, we had a little to trade them and got some weapons for the new military. They'll be champions in no time, or at least I hope.
13th Obsidian 53Our leather worker went into a strange mood a few days ago, and started shouting and demanding all sorts of things. We had to slaughter a couple of puppies to get the skins he wanted, though really that was a little of an excuse on my part. When he finished, he'd made this strange veil he called Washedhailed, the Coil Executons of Luring. He seems quite a bit more confident at his craft now, though, and thankfully remembers actually making this thing. Though the product is a little... odd, at least the process was useful.
