I'm assuming Vadels with heavy missiles are tougher than Buru Burus.

Vadels?

Hmmm. Normal Vadels are a bit over 1M PV. The cheapest Vadel variant I could find in my game is 800K PV. Am I correct in assuming that you were blown to bits by Odbgu in a Vadel, then? Or at least a character with actual dialogue? Or are you fighting entire lances of Vadels or something?

Characters with importance to the plot, even if they're just filler enemies that have no actual impact on the story, tend to have better mechs. Often custom jobs. And they also have better skills than the mooks. At least, that's how it is in my experience.

I'll have to go play a little, to see what I'm put up against by the game. I stopped playing because I got a new lancemate, dismissed my old one, got a new lancemate slot from the Cavalier's Club and now I can't find my old lancemate. This all happened in the same Spinner, too.

Melee weapons.  They deal absurd amounts of damage.  And those 10 rockets are hellfire rockets, not the most damaging rockets.  I usually deal about as much damage with 1 of my bigger missiles as he does with 1 melee hit.  He just happens to get 5 or 6 hits per attack.

Start packing some intercept weapons and ECMs.

Melee weapons are the way to go if you're looking for something that'll wreck the crap outta everything. Strap some heavy actuators on a SF1 mecha and watch it deal 500 damage in a single blow against a SF2 mecha with a DC5 weapon.

The problem, of course, is with the range; which lots of speed can compensate.

Your problem is that you are only fighting plot missions, which scale based on episode.  You need to grind with non-plot missions, which typically scale with renown (so in your case, they would consist of a single Dora).  Use the money and experience to improve yourself and mecha.

2 problems there: The only non-plot missions I can actually make a profit on are merchant robbery missions (ammo costs a lot of money), which are surprisingly hard to find, and, due to a certain early plot mission involving merchants, people (especially the police) largely refuse to give me missions of any sort.

Note that with your renown that you will be fighting the absolute weakest mecha in the game.  That said, find/modify/buy a mecha without missiles to fight the random missions.

Also, there are non-random missions you can do.  Hm, the villanous/chaotic combo really hurts your ability to get missions (and being so wagnatta does not help), I'd suggest mentioning that (if you haven't already) on the Gearhead 2 boards.

Honestly, most commentary I've read involves people restarting at below -40 renown.  But, you are so close to the end!
