I agree. I still find plenty of fun in the games that I play, even major titles.

Hell, If i felt like half of these guys apparently do, I don't even know why I'd play games anymore.

I just play if I find something fun. Even if I gotta turn my brain off a little. Really isn't that the whole point? Then again I do get enjoyment out of the bad games even. Those are fun to play and have a friend to take turns with and crack jokes. Especially if the gameplay is the good part and the story is bad.

Then again my Girlfriend is a B-Movie addict so it might just be that affect.

I wouldn't say that modern games aren't good. Even the most over-hyped, dumbed down games are often worth a playthrough (probably not at full retail price, but once the hype dies down you can pick them up for a more reasonable $10-$20). If anything, I'd say we're in a renaissance - big gaming companies are spitting out titles so fast that almost everyone can find at least one title they love, and development tools have come so far that indie studios can put out games almost on par with the big dogs while still maintaining quality.

I think that most people who hate on modern games are only remembering the gems. For every classic, there was another galaga ripoff that didn't even have the decency of modern games to have a gimmick - they were the same game with a different tileset. For every Diablo there was another failed roguelike that was either too dumbed down or too ridiculously hard (and not Fun^tm hard; Nintendo hard, or else impossibly buggy). For every Starcraft there was a Command and Conquer clone that didn't come close to being balanced (or even complete in some cases). There were plenty of crap games, we just have the 20/20 specs of hindsight to tell the difference.

This (sigged btw , EDIT: or not, image is too big). Simply its nostalgia, people only remember good games while there was even more outright crap than now (E.T. anyone? There were tons of games like this, thousands of boring centipede clones and such). Sure mainstream games nowadays are too streamlined for Bay12 crowd tastes but that's only because gaming became more popular (meaning its not only popular with nerds and computer techies). There are still good games made as we speak (can't wait for Elemental).

Oh yeah FMV  . People who think gaming was so much better back then need to watch some AVGN and Spoony to fix it.

It's just you. You're confusing fun with quality. Most fun games don't have a lot of quality and are just developed badly. DF for example is very lopsided in it's detail. On the one hand we have impressive detail in the combat system and anatomy, but on the other hand, jobs are still finished instantaneously and some jobs just don't make sense, like why we do have a separate skill for metal weapons but not for wooden weapons. It's also very buggy and can easily get repetitive unless you consciously seek out strange challenges. It's also horribly unoptimized from the get-go, as can be seen in how much trouble Today sometimes has with adding simple UI changes. It's not a good game by anyone's standards, it just happens to be a fun game.

Except for those of us that liked adventure games, RPGs by American companies, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

And to the OP: Yeah, just you. There's some nice indie titles coming up (I'd add Elemental)...and while the AAA is getting more boring by the quarter, there have been some great games for me.

Well, I'm certainly not convinced at all that games were better in the 80's and 90's. They might have seemed more innovative, sure, but that's just because there hadn't BEEN any games before and EVERY SINGLE IDEA was new and unique. And if you use different fun scales for different ages, well, the entire medium of video games can simply never hope to beat Sophocles.

I kind of understand the nostalgia points, though. Back in my day, we had a NES with three games and the cartridge connectors were so corroded they wouldn't work unless you blew at them for about fifteen minutes! And if we wanted to stop playing and go to sleep for a while, we'd have to write down a password, if the game even featured those! And then we'd have to work 20 hours in the salt mines, eating nothing but salt, and when we got home, our dad would beat us with two-by-four until it was time to go to work again! And we were GRATEFUL! We were happy then! And respected our elders!

Of course, if you seriously think that games were better before, you can just buy them from the Wii store. Everybody wins!

Oh, come on, the Wing Commander and Command & Conquer serieses are good (they only have FMV cutscenes, though), and a few FMV adventure games were good.

That's pretty much it, though, and they didn't depend on the FMV to make them good.
