There have always been both good and bad games. We look at major companies and ridicule them for their mistakes (EA, Zynga, Activision, etc.) and quite sensibly so. They're killing the gaming industry with cheap titles and ungodly marketing budgets. But we always forget that we still have a few companies who rarely release a single fluke game: Nintendo, Valve, Firaxis, Enix, and so forth. Then we have the ones that are struggling to stay in the market, and are, unfortunately, doomed to die. Sega is a good example. We've got independent game companies and developers giving us gems like World of Goo, Minecraft, and tons of free games like Spelunky, Cave Story, Iji, and so many others.

There will always be crap. We can't be assured there will always be gems.

RIP Westwood Studios. C&C isn't the same without you.

For me,gaming died in the mid/late PS2 era because companys got greedier and greedier and then games were made much shorter and focused much more on graphics.

Golden age of gaming
Cthulhu, I hate you so much for reminding me of that game. I actually owned that for a little while, when my cousin lent it to me out of his archives.

That, as you see, is a naked unhittable dwarf killing the only cleric in the game, and also, the only person that can heal or ressurect all your guys.

Actually, with all the graphics nowadays, is there really anywhere else to go but gameplay? I mean, you can't make a game look more realistic than RL, can you?

We're not at photorealism yet. Despite how realistic many new games look, there are lots of things, lighting primarily, that are still contrived.

So while we may not care about graphics, yes, there are places for them to go.

So I'm a troll now apperently  :o But seriously, people have differing opinions about things and they are just that - opinions. There are games I love that you don't. Not many on this forum can deal with that it seems like :P

Tilla, you're not a troll. But I do disagree with you.

We seem to be having extremes in the gaming and filming industry recently. IE: Inception, and then The Last Airbender. Either really really good or really really bad.

I wouldn't call it a trend, though.

You know, I played the original Prince of Persia. The Apple version, with pretty colors. It was a giant leap in graphical quality compared to most games before it, actually using whatever they used to call that poor man's motion capture where you take photos of someone hopping around and then draw the sprites from those. It also featured a sixty-minute time limit. If you don't breeze through the dungeon in one hour, the vizier kills the princess and you lose.

And it had DRM. Every few levels, you were told to find a specific page in the manual, go to a specific line of that page, and select a specific letter from that line before you could proceed.

You know, I'm not exactly sure WHICH Apple computer we had. It featured a separate keyboard and a mouse and a sophisticated window manager system that let you run several applications at the same time, and my dad was already writing his Pro Gradu on it when I was born in 1989. Looking at the product line on Wikipedia, the Apple IIGS looks like a likely candidate. It's processor ran at a whopping 2.8Mhz, and the machine allowed expansion up to 8MB or RAM. I think we still have that somewhere.

Oblivion was a castrated and dumbed version of Morrowind, with pretty graphics.
Not even a spark of innovation.
