If it is such a dominant strategy I'm sure we will see more crossbow users in the next tourney.  I picked crossbow on a whim because it seemed like nobody was going ranged and I just wanted to see what would happen.  Also, I could have easily lost in an earlier round where I suffocated mere seconds after my opponent died.  I think I've had no small bit of luck to get this far.  Equipment/Item purchases for me will be up in a while.

Is it just me, or is there no point in choosing any bladed weapon apart from the dagger? Even with its small size, it is still perfectly capable of lopping off heads and bisecting werewolves, as demonstrated by our kobold friend.

Only the adamantine one. If you're using regular materials, the wider head of the axe or greatsword does better than the dagger, or so my sojourns have led me to believe.

Pisano's main thing was that he got lucky in round 1.

If a bow user gets through the first round, they can up their archery levels so high that nothing can stop them.
Also, from my experience at looking at the competition in SA (Something Awful), only reasons why daggers are good is because they are cheap. IF I would have gone against a person with say, adamantine battle axe, I'm fairly sure I would have lost. The reason I picked dagger is just for the fact that it's the cheapest one, because I don't like to 'waste' points selling and buying things.

Okay. What I would like to buy is (EEP, CONDITIONAL BUY ORDERS):

A buckler that is one material better than the (X)bow that Pisano has (EG, if he keeps the crossbow as copper, I'd have Iron etc.)

Rest of the points to shield user. IF, I somehow have enough points to buy the buckler AND the best shield user, rest into Fighter.

Just a minor point for all the gladiators, (not just you mipe9).

Can you all do the math yourselves? I'm betting that is slowing down our glorious arena master and he's doing a ton of work as it is.

Did some testing in arena mode.

Apparently, wooden bucklers and shields are perfectly capable of blocking steel bolts. You might want to stick to oak to save costs.

Oh.

If I'm right, I should have 290 + 52*2 = 394 points left.

I'll buy a Oak Buckler (394 - 22.5 = 372.5 points left)

I'll train myself to High Master Shield User (372.5 - 364 = 8.5 points left)
and
I'll get novice fighting (5.5 points left.)

I'll save the 5.5 points left for the must have after-tournament-32-gladiator-super-rumble.

Purchased for Pisano for the Finals
I have 240 + 4 left over * 2 = 248 points to spend.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Armor user from level 6 to level 10 = 14+16+18 +20= 68 points
Crossbow from level 12 to level 14 = 65+70 = 135 points
Archery from 10 to 11 = 33 points

Total = 248

Double check these, but I think these are my total skills/equipment:

Skills for Pisano
Dodge level 6
Armor User level 10
Crossbow level 14
Archery level 11

Equipment
Bronze crossbow
Bronze breastplate, mail shirt, greaves, helmet, high boots
Steel gauntlets
Leather cap x 2

**edit** - dropped the dodge upgrade and change armor user to go to level 10.  Numbers above have been updated.

Purchased for Pisano for the Finals
By my calculations I have 240 + 9 left over * 2 = 258 points to spend.  Note that the spreadsheet thinks I only had 7 left over.  By either calculation I have enough for my purchase below.  For the record the discrepancy came from the sale of copper gauntlets which should have given me 8 (gauntlet cost) * 1.25 (copper multiplier) = 10 points back, not 8.

Dodge from level 6 to level 7 = 35 points
Armor user from level 6 to level 9 = 14+16+18 = 48 points
Crossbow from level 12 to level 14 = 65+70 = 135 points
Archery from 10 to 11 = 33 points

Total = 251

Double check these, but I think these are my total skills/equipment:

Skills for Pisano
Dodge level 7
Armor User level 9
Crossbow level 14
Archery level 11

Equipment
Bronze crossbow
Bronze breastplate, mail shirt, greaves, helmet, high boots
Steel gauntlets
Leather cap x 2

Your half right; but copper gauntlets are worth 5 points when sold: (1.25 * 8 ) = 10 / 2 = 5. So you should have 248 for the final round.

Touche... and damn.  Reworking my buy now.

edit: edited my post above with my final buy.

Hell, I'd volunteer to run the next one, but I'm bad at maths.

Same, at least without a calculator.
But I have one on my comp, and I can still do simple stuff.
