Two CF-18s intercept two Russian bombers
« on: August 02, 2010, 10:09:47 pm »

Here's the article: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cbc/100730/canada/canada_newfoundland_nl_russian_planes730

But basicly while the Russian bombers weren't technicly over our airspace, they were within a "buffer zone" as the article calls it, which we lay claim to.

I was just wondering what you guys think about it, and this isn't the first time either, during one of Obama's first visits here a pair of bombers were actually over our land in the far north.

It makes me glad we're getting new jets.

Just a little military posturing, from the article it doesn't sound that uncommon anyways.

Yeah, something that only happens once a month for the last 50 years happened! oh noes! :P

Besides, the russian bombers are pretty awesome. From what i recall, their longer range stuff are those ones with the contra rotating propellers, and their Bigger version of the b-1b lancer.

Meh, I ment all the incidents as a whole, rather than this single incident.

As a whole, it's still just posturing on both sides. Honestly, Nato probably does the exact same thing to Russia anyways.

Here not the same mind you, but posturing on Nato's part.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2473724/posts

Not exactly over Russia, but certainly over what some consider buffer states between Nato and Russia.

According to him, NATO spy planes fly along Russian borders on regular basis, every day.

"Spy planes are patrolling Russian borders in all directions, they often use the former USSR countries for this. These planes do not violate the state borders, but they study all in details. Russian Air Force traces and analyze these flights. The last AVAX flight will be analyzed as well”.

You just linked Pravda as a source.

I'm going to see if you notice what's wrong with that.

Not sure what Pravda is, just used google quickly.

Edit: Ok not a great source I admit. But honestly the Pravda link has pretty much the same info as the Freerepublic one which I don't think anyone can claim is not biased itself.

Honestly I used some pretty crappy sources I admit. But my point is that these actions, as well as similar ones such as wargames simulating Russia invading Belarus/other former SSRs(in the free republic link) are just posturing and aren't unique to any one country.

...After the overthrow of Czar Nicholas II by the February Revolution of 1917, Soviet Russia had two main newspapers, Pravda, shown here above, and Izvestia, shown below. Pravda, which means "Truth", was the official voice of the Communist Party and Izvestia, which means "News", was the Official voice of the Soviet Government.

...one of the running jokes throughout most of the Soviet dominion over Russia was this assessment of the two newspapers by the non-Communist citizenry: "There is no Pravda in Izvestia, and there is no Izvestia in Pravda" or in English "There is no truth in News, and there is no news in Truth." But this was said carefully and to people who would not report you to the Central Committee.

The newspaper is actually the butt of one of the older jokes in Russia. Well, the old Pravda. There are two new ones bearing the same name, one ultra-nationalist, and one ultra-liberal. The more things change...

A few months ago british elite pilots came to help and train our pilots so during a week jets were flying everywhere, it was pretty awesome.

So, it's pretty normal for bomber planes to fly pretty close to each other's countries and fighter planes to chase them down? Yeah, I guess Russia/Canada isn't so bad because they're far from each other and are not on unfriendly terms. It'd be a little different if it was between Egypt/Israel or India/Pakistan.
