5 and nth (spacial)dimensional block based puzzle platformers
« on: August 02, 2010, 05:04:02 pm »

Project A - 5D:
A basic block based puzzle platformer, but with 2 extra dimensions, hand crafted levels are practical, as are large level sizes (16^5 = 1 MB).
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4826080/5DPP.zip

Project B - nD:
A basic line/tile/block based puzzle platformer, but with a variable number of dimensions, hand crafted levels unpractical so procedural is neccessary, large level sizes unpractical when aproaching 10 dimensions (8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8 = 1GB!). May be more suited to AI players or just messing around in.

tis' cool and all, though extra dimensions aren't supposed to be spacial dimensions.
not that that changes anything, I'm just sayin, the various dimensions are actually way cooler than just some direction you can walk in.

with width, length, depth, time as the first four, the fifth, If I remember correctly,

Is things that could be.

It's not right to say that "time is the fourth dimension", and it always irritates me when someone says that. Time is a dimension certainly, but there is no universal numbering system for dimensions.

One of my pet peeves, too.

Alfie, how will you display/control this game?  I can sort of visualize four dimensions, though the fourth ends up being awfully noncontinuous.  Fifth and above I can't work with except in symbols.

An n-dimensional game has the astounding benefit of storing an entire adventure in your 8^n hypercube.  I look forward to this project, as unplayable as it might be.

Basically each dimension would have with it 2 keys, when one is pressed X is substituted with that dimension and the other Y. This should be ok for 5D, for nD I may just have it assign the dimensions to the keys and then let the player reassign which dimensions are on the keys.

For 4 dimensions you could work with having a bunch of 3 dimensional maps in sight, but 5 is crazy.

they don't all have to be displayed at once.

and 5 can be managed by having a table (two dimensional) where each cell contains a three-dimensional display

If you have a table of such tables, and cycle it, that makes 8.

Only 3 dimensions displayed at once.

So we gonna need superhuman memory if we try to play this?

Again, I could wrap my head around 4 dimension but 5? If you were to make both the 4th and 5th dimension 4 size people would need to remember 16 diferent 3d environments. And the n-dimensional one would need brain reconfiguring.

How about a GUI-based selector along the bottom of the screen, and/or map 1-9 and 0 and 1-9 and 0 with shift held to interacting with dimensions 1-20, and with control additionally held interact the other way? Bonus since control and shift are *designed* to work well with other keys, you don't risk some combination where a keyboard cannot interpret what keys are pressed properly and fails to register some of the keypresses.

Additinally, if the levels are procedurally generated, perhaps just store the general information and regenerate the specific blocks as needed? DF doesn't need gigabytes to store the whole world, but can recreate it consistantly...

20 dimensions? A single level would use an Exabyte of ram.
