I used to make big elaborate graveyards and private tombs, but these days I tend to just dump them in a pile just outside.
Because of this something really creepy happened today, i had recently reclaimed an old fort and there is a monument built to a cool dwarf that had died along the way , on reclaim that same dwarfs desicated torso turned up next to the monument.
As usual the body had been dumped outside so I have no idea how he got there hehe.

I just put down a massive block of tombs. Can't be bothered with anything more complex.

being that they come from a completely labor oriented socitey i hold my dwarves to a socialist ideal. all my dwarves are equals, their remains are commited to the warm embrace of the magma so that they might rejoin the earth.

a huge morgue, well mauseleom, with branches and branches, and sub-branches, and sub-sub-branches, look's like a dungeon from DnD, only there arent any ghosts, trap doors, or lich kings inside the grand tomb, but there is phat lewt, as people fill their little areas with items they want in the dwarven afterlife.

I normally cover 1 entire z level in tombs, and smooth and engrave all the walls and put statues everywhere. That is for commoners, and I make sure to put family together. The z level below that is nobles and they get tombs that are twice as large. Then, the next level is military dwarves and military nobles. They get the biggest tombs. I love my dwarves. THEYRE DWARVES AND DWARVES DESERVE RESPECT DAMNIT!

It usually breaks down to this. One of the first things I do is build 3x3 tombs with statues, engravings, coffers, and the like for the founders. I usually build smaller tombs with the same for soldiers, their spouses and children. For the nobles I build them tombs when I literally have nothing else to do, and if the nobles complain, I follow their requests, but I hope they like it the second time around, because I kill them they have unfortunate accidents after its done for some reason. I never care for pets, and unless they prove their worth, they can rot and be made into bone bolts for all I care.

cheap no quality stone coffins for most including pets, to train up new masons,  nobles get what they demand. then the little lever next to the coffin gets pulled and the resulting cave in frees up the space for the next moron occupant.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

Massive catacombs. It's the right thing to do. Just imagine a hundred years after the fortress is inevitably dead, some adventurers come upon the ruins and find a 100x100 great hall deep under the earth with endless rows of stone sacrophagi. Then... they step on a plate and magma floods the entire thing. But that's a story for a different day.

I've recently taken to giving each dwarf there own small tomb, with a coffer and cabinet for their worldly posessions.  The advantage of this is that they have somewhere to keep their stuff while they are alive, without bumping up their room values to something unaffordable by putting too much furniture in it.

The starting seven, and any dwarf that distinguishes himself gets a larger and more impressive tomb.

I also like to separate my cemetary into military and civilain wings.

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

I go for the massive burial chamber, especially since i'm remaking the castle from ICO.

Burial chamber from the beginning is a must.

Mass grave rooms. Depending on the fort I'll give them coffins, then when every tile is filled with remains/coffins I either seal the room off or if possible I collapse something on it, pour magma in it, make an obsidian cast, ect.

Sometimes I'll make epic tombs for uberdorfs though. Once in d40 I had a champion who got an artifact elephant bone helmet that I planepacked into a ridiculous amount of wealth (around 3 times that of the rest of my fort combined), he was originally a legendary engraver, also got to be a legendary axedwarf, wrestler, shield user, armor user, ect. as a champion. I had an eight champion military and he was the leader, he had something like 500 kills on goblins and later handled an entire frog clown funhouse singlehandedly. Once I got funmetal the king came and *GASP* it was a goblin leader of DWARVES! So naturally my champion led the dwarves in a rebellion against this false tyrant, chaining him in the funhouse (because of a hilarious bug that treated non dwarven rulers as livestock) and claiming the funmetal throneroom for himself and his wife, who was also a quad legendary champion. All nobles were executed on sight other than the dungeon master and philosopher, the champions of the military became the new lords and ladies of the fort.

He eventually died considering that fort ran for like 80 years before I ended up abandoning due to lag, a lucky goblin arrow to the head ended up killing him. He got a 3z level 8x12 tomb full of bauxite statues decorated with rubies, a masterwork bauxite coffin, bauxite floors, (he liked bauxite and cows), magma channels for flavor, the entire room covered in masterwork engravings, mostly flux layers. He had two platinum cages with bulls flanking his coffin and one tile of magma directly in front of his coffin that was below a shaft leading up to the goblin stasis chamber, where I had a very large goblin cage stockpile. I kept most goblins for entertainment/training purposes but all archers captured after his death were immediately pitted down the shaft into the magma to appease him. His masterwork funmetal armor was placed in a bin behind his coffin, but the elephant bone helm was taken up by his wife. She never died but if she did she had a tomb full of cats, cobaltite furnishings and waterways across the hall waiting for her.

My dwarves are fed to the vast Underpit so that they may provide sustenance to Gallugh-Mah, the Darkening One. It is hoped that in their death they may serve our she-god well and bring her baleful favor upon us.
