caverns devoid of undergrowth
« on: July 31, 2010, 02:17:03 am »

I just breached the cavern layer in my new fort.
Last time I did that, I found a cavern, teeming with plant and tree life.
My current cavern is completely devoid of plant / tree growth.

I guess this means there's no underground water in these caverns?

If so, what's weird is that the ground *is* muddied.

had this myself a couple of times. did you change your number of cavern layers in worldgen?

I *think* it can happen any time, but my feeling is if you set number of caverns down to 1 or 2, sometimes they can be empty of plantlife. not sure whether it's a bug or not.

I had a setup once with two layers, a tree-filled one and one like you describe. If you haven't exposed all the layers, you might want to do some more digging.

In my most recent fort, the first cavern layer is muddied but has no native plant growth. I unlocked the other layers but still nothing is growing in the first cavern, even though my self-made underground tree farm is doing fine.

Edit: My site was not reclaimed.

One of my forts had nothing on the first 2 caverns, and only bloodthorns growing in the third.  Didn't have any water either, maybe its related?

Did you reclaim?  Reclaiming cleans all contaminants, including mud, and plants won't grow without mud.

I did not reclaim.
Neither did I do any modding at all to the raws / worldgen specs.

I breached the second cavern now, it has herbs and fungitrees. Yay.
I suspect, the first cavern layer has no direct access to underground water.
