Maybe a vehicle bay. As big as you can and then we can see it our ships fit. Once I can play, I might actually design fighter craft/etc. Even if I can't squeze ships in there, there's always Space Figs or bikes, etc.

At least a dedicated in-game chat channel. I tried both "B12" and "TAC" last night, apparently no-one was listening.

Disaster has said that he can gladly transform said forum into a Coalition forum instead, if you guys want it.

I see you guys still haven't added me to the coalition. Bah, I guess you want my flag and such right?

Empire name: Starborn Dominion
Ruler: Conall Kemp, Cian Kemp (both me)
Empire Pop: 10 if you don't include my alt char. However, only 3 others seem to be active.
Currently controlling 4 systems (each active player has their own).

Flag is rather small since I just whipped it up specifically for the game and their pixel requirements (it gets scaled down ingame anyway).

Current tech level for ships is 14. Somehow I managed to outpace even the larger empires. I guess its my trading practices - make new colony, build warehouses, sell all materials to colony at exhorbitant prices.

Current immigration policy is by request, but I open it on demand if anyone wishes to join. Just PM me.

I attempted the construction of a space tug, which would be capable of docking damaged spacecraft inside it and then taking them to a repair station in good time, possibly even through wormhole jumps (this would also allow for it to theoretically take non-wormhole ships through wormholes).

I'm about halfway done with the design, and I've run into a slight technical problem.    There is no way in hell I'll be able to build this thing.

Currently it requires over 15,000 bars of metal to construct, not to mention the thousands of electronics and whatnot to power the massive engines of this thing (currently at 520 MPS/S acceleration.  I needed to go high because this thing needs to push two ships, not just one), and the vast size results in a titanic hull hitpoint number which shoots the tech requirements up to TL22.  And I haven't even built the cargo hold yet, let alone the sickbay, bridge, teleporter, shields, crew quarters etc...

The docking bay is 20wide by 25 long by 4 high.  I figured this was actually a relatively modest size for docking spaceships.  But because of it this thing is valued at about 7,000,000 spacebucks, a value far beyond anything it'll be transporting.

Should I scratch the design?  Do we even need space tugs, or is it possible for a cargo ship to just supply damaged vessels with the necessary materials to patch themselves up?  Would it be worth it to have a wormhole-capable transport that can take medium-sized vessels through the warp?  Does anyone have anything remotely close to TL22?

Or should I go back to figuring out how the hell I'm going to manage a luxury liner?

Ship design is about all about size-effective hulls.
Long ships and tall ships apparently got differences.
You should first start with really small ships to get the hang of it.

There's also two important things to think about: "Walkability" (is it possible to walk inside it when lagged?) and "Organization" (or whatever you like to call).
For example, in a combat/lag situation, you should be able to leave the ship via hull doors or teleports quickly, or even access the right places in lowest time possible (cargo hold/teleport room/bridge).

-
My thoughts on ship-design
In summary, making a size-effective ship will result in a maxed out, overall good ship, in every TL you want.
Making a Huge ship really doesn't appeal to me, because this ship will need more gravity/wormhole/power plants, thus making the power requirements bigger, thus getting their power/shields/fuel/weapon systems drained out very quick, depending on the TL and Fuel Capacity/Power Plant Units.

I like to max out my ships as much as I can, but ship design is something really individual for each people, and that's why it's fun.

About the ship:
Of course you can make a huge ship to transport other starcrafts inside it, but that will need a huge vehicle bay and a lot of decks (if you gonna transport a 7-decker starship, your bay will need to be 8 decks tall).
With that huge bay, you will just be able to insert a bridge, officer/crew quarters, and a gravity well for transport between decks.
Am I forgetting something? Yeah, the engine room.
At least 600 units of powerplants/gravity drives and maybe ~200 wormhole drives. I think it's more, but 1.400 equipment modules is already TL7, and you still lack all the other equipment (shields, transport, sensor, quarters, consoles, turrets) that can sum up to 200 if you're minimalist....
That's a T8.

Remember: I think it needs WAY more than that in equipment, plus the Hit Points will be HUGE and rush through TL10 IMO, and I only thought about ONE 8-decker 15x15 bay. Which I still think is small.
Transporting huge ships isn't a good idea...

--
PS: Don't forget you only start to really design ships on TL7, when you're able to build all equipment and rooms.
This makes you think in a lot more stuff.

Fighter carrier is easy, the problem is making a ship with starcrafts.
Fighters fit in a 4x4 (IIRC), 1 deck area.

Also, I NPCs can't fly fighters yet, though it's on dev's plans I think.

*snip*

Not entirely sure who you're talking to...  I've already designed half the ship, with required engine rooms, fuel cells, vehicle bay, and so on.  I'm not inquiring as to the logistics of designing a ship, I'm asking if there's actually a use for the damn thing, or if its rescue-and-retrieve purpose is even necessary/desired.  I'm also asking if anyone is capable of building something this huge, and it will indeed be huge because of the required size of the vehicle bay.  And yes, I am aware that ships require one extra deck of space in order to fit.  I don't know of any ships that would be seven decks tall and yet fit into a 15x15 footprint though...  Is that a common design?

One thing that should be noted, however, is that I am indeed not the most skilled at high-density ships with rooms that flow into one another.  And, to be perfectly honest, I don't intend to become highly skilled at that.  I don't mind putting in a few extra grav drives and power supplies (with appropriate fuel stocks) for the sake of a less effective design that is aesthetically pleasing and that has an easy-to-understand layout.  I've got infinite supplies of the materials, why should it matter if the design takes 20 minutes instead of 16 to build (not that I have any idea about actual ship construction/material gathering times.  These are just random numbers)?

Yes, so my luxury liner has two-tile-wide hallways with multiple 2x2 staterooms, each with one door and two single-tier bunks.  It's dreadfully inefficient, but you know what?  It actually looks like a luxury ship.  Same with the star-shaped domed viewing lounge/casino, situated in between the two engine rooms with gravity drives exposed and putting on a fancy light display.  Quite inefficient, even downright useless in places.  But it looks freakin' awesome.

Wait, what?! All my old saved ship designs are gone.

Which especially sucks, because one of the designs I was saving until it could actually be produced by my Empire...
