Akar is a born and bred Cathak. Strength at Arms has been the focus of his life for years. He was a competent swordsman before age 13, when he exalted. There was never any doubt in his mind that he would. From an impeccable bloodline, his mind and body were weapons, to be honed and trained. His course was set from childhood. He would be an Immaculate. His family questioned that decision many times, not wanting to lose his bloodline, but he refused to be dissuaded. The Immaculates were the strongest, and he would be as well. He would try himself against the direst of opponents, and emerge victorious. What more could a Cathak want?
And it happened. He exalted a few days after his 13th Birthday, and joined the order. He entered training, excelling at the physical aspects. Which isn’t to say he was dumb. While studies were never his focus, he didn’t slack off on them. The Terrestrial is very perceptive, even if he doesn’t look it.
Just as his training finished, the Campaign against the Bull of the North began its preparations. He requested to be sent with the troops, his loyalty to House Cathak still engrained within him. A number of other Immaculates made similar requests, and Akar was granted permission. The days prior to the assault rank among his fondest memories. The Combined Might of House Cathak. A Fighting Force he believed unequaled throughout Creation. Pride, Confidence, all emotions that ran strongly through the Dragonblooded. Here was might, power, and the heart of the Realm. House Cathak gave him many powerful Artifacts, that he might use them. The Immaculate Armor of the Fire Dragon. The Elemental Lens. Twin Red Jade Short Swords. All the weapons he could want.
It was during this he met Amara Trence. An Earth Aspect Lost Egg from Chiaroscuro, she has been adopted by House Cathak. While of no great lineage, she was clever with her hands, and had turned into one of the better pilots and engineers of the Realm. She was going along with the Fighting Force, flying one of the Realms Battle Carriers, still another sign of their unequaled might. The Woman lacked conviction, simply going along with what she was told. She had been raised in a Pagan faith, and her understanding of the Immaculate Faith was wooly at best. Akar spent time with her and various other weak hearted members of the house, strengthening their resolve. And when the expedition set off, his heart swelled.
Of course, that quickly ended. As well as Akar’s life… almost. He lay bleeding on a cold plain of Ice, surrounded by the corpses of Dragonblooded and Mortal alike, waiting for death to claim him. His Swords lay before him, shatters of Red Jade from the broken weapon steeping in Red Life’s Blood. Then an old man appeared, complete with a cane, and hobbled over to him. Despite the freezing temperatures, he didn’t seem bothered. He just walked up to Akar and offered him a hand up. Despite the fact that Akar knew he had been dying a moment ago, he felt his mind clear, and his vision lose that darkened quality.
“Are you going to lay down there all day?”
When Akar stood up, the full terrible quality of the battlefield filled him. So many of his family dead. And then the old man asked his question. “Why was the greatest civilization in Creation beaten by an unlettered Barbarian?” Akar looked about, murmuring “I… don’t have the answer to that question.” The Old man handed him two Short Swords, similar to the Jade ones he had wielded. “Hmmmm… here. Hold onto these until you do.” Akar stared at the blades. Ornate, and beautiful, they were far superior in terms of balance to his former blades. When he looked up, the Old man was gone, as if he had never been, leaving Akar’s healed form, and his question as the only proofs of his existence. Akar had wandered about the Battlefield, finding another survivor, in the form of Amara. The Dragonblooded was wounded, lying in the damaged Battle Carrier. Her wounds would heal in time, but the cold would have killed her before then. Akar used his Hearthstone to provide them with Warmth. It took them a week of solid effort to get the Battle Carrier in anything approaching working order. They would have failed entirely, had Amara not found a supply of White Jade. Even after that week, the ship barely flew.
As they went south, Amara felt another supply of Jade tugging at her senses. A huge one. One that should not have gone unnoticed. They landed near it, discovering an Ancient Manse, built to service the Air Fleet of the Solars. It was filled with powered down Automatons. They awoke, and followed Amara’s Orders once she had discovered the Hearthstone, hidden in the depths of the Manse. The Battle Carrier was rebuilt with the aid of the Automatons. Akar spent that time mulling over the old man’s question. He couldn’t get it out of his mind. And when Amara asked him when he wanted to return to the Realm, he informed her they wouldn’t. Akar would seek out the Anathema. He would know their strength, what the source was. Despite the danger to his soul, he would do so. Amara followed. Despite anything, she knew she owed her life to the strange, driven Immaculate, and that wasn’t a debt she could repay easily. Besides, she was the owner of a Manse, and a powerful Airship. If she returned to the Realm, she’d have to give both of those back, and she didn’t really find that notion attractive.
