Month end work.... what is it?

I've seen Toady mention month-end work a bunch of times but can't find an explanation as to what exactly it is. Anyone know?

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

Of course, that's from a year and a half ago...  Given the way that many of Toady's games are publicly released in "open alpha" states, there's reason to doubt he's been working on the same project all this long.

It isn't DF related...

Maybe he uses the month's end to have a life? As far as I can tell, the rest of the month is spent slaving over us.

A subgame Toady made to release portions of DF's code.  Wasn't really more than a very simple 'conquer territories, RISK style' type of game.
