Overlap between the bay12games forums and the xkcd forums
« on: July 28, 2010, 07:33:06 am »

I noticed this, and a few people on xkcd noticed it. There are even a few users with the same avatars for both (I'm talking to you, NieXS and Sizik). Has anyone else noticed it? anyone with different usernames want to reveal themselves?

I like some of the comics but the fans scare me. :D

Yeah, I haven't noticed it either. I don't particularly like xkcd myself.

I noticed it and I don't even visit xkcd's forums. Both have a similar fan base. Also, I think there's an overlap between Something Awful and bay12. Bay12 looks like it lies between SA and xkcd.

Yeah, xkcd and B12 have a shared fanbase. I too read xkcd, but I'm not on the forums.

I don't think there's much of an overlap between SA and B12. Over there, the only goons who visit B12 are probably LP authors and people in the DF thread, and over here, I doubt any of us have SA accounts. The only overlap seems to be the LP subforum here.

From what I've seen...

xkcd
- More educated people than average
- Excessive love for theories
- Almost exclusively techies
- A little love for trolling

Bay12
- More educated people than average
- Excessive love for theories
- Some techies, some liberal arts people
- A little love for trolling
- Plenty of forum games
- Strictly enforced forums (report any trouble to Toady/ThreeToe)
- A lot of silliness, little stupidity
- Strong cliques (all those bloglike threads)

SA
- A lot of love for trolling
- Forum game lovers
- Strictly enforced forums
- A lot of silliness, little stupidity
- Very strong cliques

/b/
- A lot of love for trolling
- Minimum enforcement
- A lot of silliness, a lot of stupidity
- Extremely strong cliques

What would the MSPA forum be in that equation?

There are a few adventures about DF over there.

I find SA a bit... Awful. I spent a week at facepunch when I considered buying gmod, and from what I've seen they resemble each other in more than one way. Well maybe not, but from the little I've seen SA are headed that way. Just the way they phrase the section titles in enough to get people to leave. "General Bullshit"? Come on, I think of at least ten ways to rephrase that so it doesn't sound downright stupid or even slightly obscene. I'm not even going to mention their adbot's avatar. This and this are hardly funny. I can go on, pointing all these first impression stuff, but I think you get the point. I have yet to see what actually happens behind all this, and what the community itself looks like.
