Twitter what? Is that some kind of internet thing?

Ah, I see. Well, it looks like we can update the map format. However, the server hasn't bugged out yet with the fresh map, which is definitely suggesting that there's something wrong somewhere in the old one. We'll keep the old one for the forseeable future, though.

If its just a matter of it being too big why not trim it a bit?

Notch has stated a number of times that the actuall size of the map doesn't matter since only parts of it are loaded at any one time. The only time the size of a map would cause lag is if there where a large number of players all in different chunks. This would cause the server to have to load an active chunk for each one. Basically its a similar instancing system (in principle, not necessarily implementation) to what WoW does.

Main causes of the lag would probably be to do with things like fluid physics calculation or a large amount of logic calculations; e.g. large amounts of flowing water, magma, fire or possibly large amounts of redstone logic or Minecart related processing.

Actually that might be the problem; Minecarts keep chunks active... So all those unattended minecarts at boosters and stations etc will be keeping chunks active that wouldn't normally be active causing an unusual amount of work for the server, i.e lag.

Edit: also according to the bug list, boats cause a lot of lag :S

Minecarts were made to keep chunks active as part of a bug fix ( I might be able to find the blog post if you want)

actually, minecrarts don't keep chunks loaded.

I've exited while riding a minecart alone, and it was still there when I got back. and I've exited when there was somebody nearby to keep the chunk loaded, and when I got back, the cart had run off.

Maybe it was fixed properly so they don't now. They used too

Well, if that's the problem, that explains a lot. It sounds like it's worth a shot to search and destroy all the minecarts.

We're back to the normally scheduled programming. Now go out and kill minecarts!

Honestly, I really don't think the problem is minecarts.

My singleplayer client has a memory leak so bad it crashes in less than a minute.

It might not be, it was just a theory. It makes me laugh that it leaks that bad especially as java has a garbage collector.

The Java garbage collector was not made to collect a megabyte per second.

It just keeps going up in memory usage untill it crashes. 'thump'.
Memory leak, memory deallocation farce, who knows.

Bear in mind, this is while standing still!
