They are a new part of the terrain generator. We also get  high-altitude lakes.

I like this map, especially where the spawn is set up, it's quite a cool way to start the map. I'd also like to know if the map is staying put and good job on getting the server set back up and your continuing work on doing so. I really appreciate it.

I'm being very unlucky this game round. First I dig an awesome shaft and grab 5 diamonds, make a watch and compass, then a creeper crawls up on me and kills me. I can't find my shaft again either, it was on a beach with loads of big sandy hills, it was a pretty cool place.

Then I start again and cut down 64 logs worth of trees and a creeper kills me in one again, this time I found my way back because someone built a big landmark featuring lava streaming down the sides, whoever built that, thanks!

My new place is some sort of crater surrounding by big cliffs, it's not half cool

in Minecraft, you build stuff out of stuff, while hiding scaredly from creepers at night.
Dig out rock with a pick you made, use the rock to build a hut. Or a castle. Or a tower. Whatever.
Or dig up sand with a shovel and make a sand hut/castle/tower/thing.

Its a sandbox game,basically.
