Not really, Thexor. That ping has nothing to do with the server itself. It only measures the internet line. So it's the ISP being horribad right now.

Wait, the ping is independent of the server? I admit I'm not a networks guy, but isn't ping time based on the delay between sending a packet and receiving a response? If the server's overloaded and can't immediately handle the connection, it would increase the visible delay.

...of course, part of my denial is me still holding out hope that it's something easy to solve. Contacting the ISP and demanding better service is hard. Restarting the server is easy. Standard IT practice is to hope it's an easy-to-fix problem until proven otherwise.  ;D

Networking and other basic systems have priority over any other processes in pretty much any OS out there. So yeah, that's a networking issue, nothing to do with the server software/machine.

In any case, the easiest way to test would be to shutdown the minecraft process during a high latency time and start pinging around to see if it will change, if not, we eliminate that. I'm pretty sure that's not it anyway. An overloaded server would show lag in game, not in an external ping.

We are pretty much certain it's AT&T. We're trying to contact them...

An overloaded server would show lag in game, not in an external ping.
Actually, overloaded in playercount would cause the return packets to be delayed, as you'd still be uploading game packets, and you can't upload two different bits in the same "space".
It's easy enough to test.
Go to www.pingtest.net and run a test while the server is running, and run the same test again when it's not.

...There is no such thing as an external ping.  There must be a machine at the receiving end to clear the packet and send a return "A-OK" packet.
The time between when the remote server sent the packet and when it got the return packet back is what is defined as ping.
A slow ping in that sense is the definition of lag in Internet terms.  It has widely come to become synonymous with low FPS, but that is incorrect usage.
[/ramble]

Ping to your IP in particular is, in fact, tied to any programs you have with open connections.

That's an overloaded network, even downloading porn could cause that. Minecraft barely uses bandwidth (unless there are chunks loading), so unless someone's downloading porn with that link, I see no reason for the lag.

I know there is a lag spike when people are loading chunks. Apparently the chunk loading process is in the same thread as the rest of the server, so that sucks. The thing is, that sort of lag wouldn't affect pings.

Hey, I've been mining out and area below my base, broke into some caverns, and have been exploring that. The only thing is that as I was poking around I found an area that has been mined and explored by someone else, the only problem is I can't find any way up from that point without going back up the way I came. So I have two questions:

1. Anyone know who it could belong too? The area I broke into was a very tall cylindrical cavern, and about one level up was a wooden bridge, I also found a chest, furnace, and crafting table. Who owns the big giant tower at spawn? (See below).

2. Anyone know how to get up from there?

I've marked out the the entrance to 'my' area of the caverns, there's a cobblestone bridge with two signs briefly explaining some of ^this^.

I could be under the big giant tower right at spawn, but I'm not sure. I'm totally under the big giant tower at spawn, but question 2 is still there.

Does anyone have a recent map of the server?

Big giant tower is mine and I already mined out the bottom of it. It's going to be the entrance to a tunnel network eventually, among other things

How do you get a map of the server? I can do it if you tell me how.

Who put in the giant iron block monorail, and i dam well hope you use legitimate resources...

Doubt it was legitimate, probably 1000 iron blocks in it. and the diamond ones. still impressive, in a way, quite a dam long structure.

anyway, i went and built a treehouse over towards nome's public mine/cave's

Got random diamond blocks in it too.

Nice to see Nome made the walk to my area a little more exciting with a fountain and a back entrance to the sphere, bit of a shortcut for me too!

The Monorail is being removed by the creator. Apparently there was 'an exploit' which allowed infinite diamonds and iron to be generated. Please do not use this exploit, especially for things like iron and diamond, which are supposed to be rare.
Seriously people. A little common sense, is it too much to ask?

an exploit to make infinite iron and diamonds? wow.
I wish I knew how such a thing would work, but probably it is best if it is not made public. less people know, less people use.
