I'm willing to keep the Main server running as a semi-public server with the secondary server dedicated to this new project. I'd suggest a cellular structure such as a city, which allows a lot of freedom within a local area but has a coherent large-scale structure. I would also advise using only "natural" components for this project.

I don't think I should be in charge of any such project, as this might cause a conflict of interests.

It would look impressive but it would have to well designed in order to avoid looking like it was built by a bunch of lemmings that spent all morning smoking crack. Also, how would we get a large enough floating landmass? Map generator?

I'd presume that it'd just be built up as we went along. We could also play with seeds to find a good one.

I wonder... it wouldn't be too hard to make the game occasionally copy a private world map to a public server. This is purely hypothetical, but it might be interesting to have a publicly accessible server that is updated every few hours from the private server, allowing everybody to explore the city freely...

It would allow flexibility... but yes, you'd need some kind of organization.

Some seeds, -1784338777788894343 is quite good, if you want flat: 'http://www.minecraft.com', 'em'. Hilly with places which look like they're TNT bombed 'chrisboden'.

Problem: Not sure if those seeds will work after the update, which might change the way maps are generated. I'll check em out though.

 Build two platforms, one above the other and both being comprised of grids of cobble with large open gaps. The upper plate is the base plate, where most structures are based. The bottom plate is simply a construction base so you can build on the undersides of your structures. No need to make it on a floating island, make the city itself float. No need for that terra firma crap.
