The 503s gone, but now I'm getting a 'Took too long to log in' error.

I'm also getting 503'd. Just to let you know.

Edit: I'm in now. Keep trying if you're struggling.

So I was thinking of starting a new minecraft server. I have a few ideas.

One would be a normal server with the restriction that nothing (or nearly nothing) may be built above ground. Another potential I've been considering is permanight, which could be done pretty easily, I think. I'd just need a script to keep resetting the time.

I was also thinking these could be combined to enforce the underground-only construction; that is, don't build anything on the surface, or SSSSsssssomething terrible might happen.

How's that sound? This would replace the relatively unused secondary server, currently floating islands.

Sounds good, but I think that there should at least be some minor tip-of-the-iceberg type buildings at the top.

Large caves could be TNT'd out.

Sounds like Dwarf Fortress. If everyone dug and built in the same place.

A permanight server, BiomeTerrainMod'd in order to have only a few layers be above ground with PLENTY of room below ground, with some server mods that ramp up the number of hostile mob spawns.

Name the server: "The Underdark"

Here's the script I'm using. Tell me if it'll explode anything:
Code: [Select]
while [1]
do
screen -X {relevant screen socket number} time set 1400
wait 360
done

This will reset the time to shortly after sunset, every six minutes, keeping the world in permanent darkness! BWAHA HA HA HA HA!

I think you can afford a longer time interval.

I think you can afford a longer time interval.

Night is only seven minutes long; I want to have at least a few seconds on either end to prevent lag from causing visible glitches.

That said, it isn't working... it says that the command on line 1 doesn't exist. I'm going to ask Tahin.

It seems like a good idea. Finally we're all going to live in the same Dwarf Fortress! Yeehah! :D
