I was thinking of creating a new map and putting the spawn point in a small cave deep below the earth. I guess we'd have to spawn lumps of wood occasionally, until somebody found the surface.

But... what's to stop someone just digging/building a spiral staircase straight up? It probably wouldn't take more than 3 minutes to find the surface that way.   




Oh, and the game seriously needs to re-add death. I managed to fall off the world ("silly internet, load those chunks faster! How dare you tempt me with visions of magma caverns beneath the surface!" *pause* *jump*)... and it turns out, you don't die. You just sit there, standing on nothing, until you disconnect. Which was totally hilarious, but kind of annoying.

Hmm... I managed to kill a pig, apparently, by trapping it under water - the lake refroze while the lil' piggy was practicing his snorkeling skills, and next thing I know there's meat at the bottom of the lake. Still can't seem to punch them to death, and I've heard that swords don't work too well either. I guess mobs are currently Bronze Colossi - if a sword doesn't work, look for a truly dwarfy solution instead. 



Other than that, traversed a neat cave system all the way to the lava lakes, only to find that someone else had partially explored the cave. Hope you don't mind me intruding in the depths, whoever you are. (It's the road system leading left out of spawn, if that helps.)

It was me, I posted about it in the post above, Exploring them is fine, it's why I built the road to them. I thought they were pretty epic. I like the underground spawn idea though PTTG

Just found a dungeon, my first in any version. Took the mossy cobblestone, destroyed the chest only to find 7 gunpowder. There is a pig spawner down there, though no pigs.

The caverns under the castle I'm building are pretty huge. They most likely join with the ones you were exploring sizeak as you're not far from me.

I've not built such a large cobblestone building before, I tend to build smaller stuff and different materials. I don't know what to do with the inside.

I just finished another building. Inspired by the reed farm under the lake I turned a small pond into this:






I'll definitely be using fences like I have in that top shot again.

I've gotten some questions about item hacking and exploits. I will not ban anyone for using an external utility to make items, or otherwise hacking them in. Exploits too. However, using hacked items to cause trouble is just as bad as not using hacked items to cause trouble. Particularly when hacking in things like dynamite.

In the future, when SMP is more fully functional, this will be reviewed.

So guys, I was thinking of buying minecraft as it looks to be an interesting game. The only thing I am worried about is that it may get boring quickly and I'm still undecided as to whether or not I buy it, The website was a little vague about what the game is like in general.

Can anyone persuade me to buy it? It does look like a fun game

Try the free classic client on the website. In the paid version you can do loads more but it will give you an idea of what it's like

You could also check gooncraft.net, to see if eg. Malux is streaming.

Should make it easy to see what minecraft is.

Ok I watched a bit of that Gooncraft streaming thing, it seemed alright. What does everyone on the forum generally do? Build forts and things like that?

Usually, towers are a big favourite to. On the last map I built a mountain hall, nuke built a big compass tower and a light house. Some people just build hoses. On the current map someone has built a giant castle thing, some towers and I used to much TNT when clearing away the mountain below my tower and ended up destroying half of it :/
