We’re imagining a large medieval chamber filled with techno-religious imagery where these knights cyber must simultaneously turn hybrid thumb drive/skeleton keys in a massive router, filling the room with the blinking light of connectivity.

So not sure. My guess would be it's some sort of system in which there's a semi-centralized shutoff switch for various pipelines to the internet, with the keys holding data needed for the various protocols which would turn on the various parts. Or something. There may also be something to do with a series of tubes.

Also, I'm going to be very disappointed if XKCD doesn't turn this into a really awesome comic.

That IPv4 thing has had people worried since before 2000, that article is from 2006 anyway. Though it's predicted that we might run out by 2011.

The internet is a crazy system though. It's more complicated and convoluted than it needs to be. It's going to be insane when we finally switch over to IPv6. I don't really think that very much would require an emergency shutdown of the internet. Not with the current state of botnets and such.

The encryption code for a "master root key"? I don't know the specifics of the internet(though I know it's horribly designed, only intended to be used by a MUCH smaller number of people) but what would a master root key DO? And why does there have to be one? Not to mention, how do you shut off the internet?

IPv6 has a reach of less than 1%. Of course we're still using it. It's generally impossible to use the internet if you DON'T use it.
