Restricting Workshops by Skill Level?
« on: July 27, 2010, 12:56:10 pm »

So I was cruising around the facepalm moment thread, which seemed to suggest that you can set workshops to only except dwarves of skill level x or higher? Is that right? It sounds amazing. How? And can I set a blacksmiths workshop to accept only legendary skill for armor jobs but any skill for metalcrafting jobs? God I hope so, but i have a feeling that wouldn't be dwarvenly inefficient enough.

Go to the building with Q, and then somewhere in their should be an option to "Manage workshop profile".

You can either select specific dwarfs for that workshop, or have a skill level cutoff.  I think you'll need a manager noble to make this work?

Oh, and I don't think you can do it by job, but you could just create two different workshops and have them do different tasks?  One workshop building crafts and one building armor.  Probably will work well this way:

Workshop A:  Super legendary dwarf only
Workshop B:  Any dwarf

Superdwarf:  Disable metalcrafting
Otherdwarfs:  Disable armor making.

I think that would mostly work.

right, thats exactly what i was thinking. Not the most efficient solution, but beats nothing.

Actually that method is quite efficient, in that you can have your bad dwarves cranking out stuff and if you need something from the good dwarf you dont have to halt production,  to me that seems fairly efficient.

Now if only you could control where the manager assigns specific jobs (u-m-q).  If I order 100 stone blocks and 30 tables, they're gonna get distributed evenly between my master mason shops and the block grunt shops...  Am I missing something here?

yeah, actually, now that i think about it, as long as you have one workshop thats turning out schlock repeatedly, this is probably a MORE efficient system.

I  would just make sure that my master mason was busy when the repeat blocks job was ordered, they wouldnt swap out, would they? hmm, can you set a maximum skill level?

I hadn't thought of that.  That is probably going to be a problem.

Ok, so say you have two mason workshops, Legendary workshop and newb workshop. First set up a ‘repeat tables’ tables command on the legendary workshop. Legend mason starts. Then do repeat block on the newb workshop. Legend dwarf is already busy with the tables, a job which, by virtue of the workshop, only he can do, right? So if eventually, you decide to stop making legendary tables, he’ll move to something else, but only after you’ve stopped whatever he was up to at the legendary workshop, right?

the point being it isnt a problem, maybe...

Right, but this bypasses the manager orders entirely, which I resorted to doing for this scenario.  It's nice to be able to in just a few keystrokes from anywhere say "I want 30 rock tables" and never have to even touch the mason's shop.  Otherwise, I have to find the exact master workshop and manually set up the production order.  Additionally, if I want *exactly* 30 tables, I have to revisit the shop 3 times (10 item limit).

Perhaps if the manager order screen had a "minimum/maximum quality" control for each order that would place those jobs only in shops that meet the criteria.

oh oh ohhhhh. I just go to workshops to do allllll my job assignments. I forgot you could do it through manager. When it comes to quantities i just set it on repeat and leave it there until i remember to shut it off or change it, haha. Can't have too many doors/tables/chairs/statues/coffins/weaponracks/blocks, except when you have too many of each, all at the same time...
