Ok imagine I'm holding a pike. . .
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:16:49 am »

I've got a pikedwarf who, giving individual melee weapon choice has chosen a short sword, as I don't have any pikes. This hasn't stopped them leading a pike demonstration! Must be interesting to watch . . .

Hah!

Yeah, that'd be hilarious. Improvisation should cause a lower EXP gain, of course, but this way is more fun.

maybe he's just a very small dwarf to think that's a pike he's holding. hopefully he's not getting bad thoughts because all the laughs.

Maybe he attached it to a branch(which are never shown ingame).

Is he gaining Pikedwarf skills from that?

He DID gain pikedwarf skill from that session. As did the dwarf he was teaching.

Maybe it was a technical demonstration of where to hit someone who is holding a sword, if you've got a pike.

Quite logical. The biggest threat to a polearm user is a close-in weapon like a sword.

You could give a demonstration on basic technique just pretending to hold a pike

Or you could pick up a stick and there isn't really any difference.

Can dwarves even use pikes? I thought pikes were too large

Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.

Dwarf-sized pikes would be precisely sized.. for Dwarves.

That's not how items work. A pike is a pike is a pike; none are "dwarf-sized".

Pikes are [MINIMUM_SIZE:62500], so a reasonably large dwarf would be able to use one two-handed.

They are still a foreign weapon, though, so you'd have to capture or buy one for him to use one.

Could just be regular spears.

Or not, since he did say there were no pikes available. Which puts forward the question, how was he a Pikedwarf in the first place?
