Alright, more fun time:
Did you guess who it was that could be recruited?
Have anybody (it doesn't have to be Sigurd) with atleast 10,000 gold talk to Beowulf, and they'll automatically bribe him over to your side! Who'd have thought that you can buy a mercenary?!
Beowulf isn't spectacular, but he does have both pursuit and charge, as well as decent stats.
Voltz on the other hand....
Is not only not recruitable, but is really the only formidable opponent in the entire squad of Mercenaries. One GREAT thing though, is that the has the Elite ring, which as you might gives the Elite ability, doubling the amount of experience that character receives! Make sure that you have a character you like gets the kill, so they get the ring. However, Voltz can easily kill a character with a lucky Continue attack, so it's best to kill him as quickly as possible, even if you're preferred character doesn't get the ring. I have Azel get the ring, since I like him so much.
Now, this isn't going to be the last time that we face a platoon of enemies on horseback, and the rules are significantly different if you want to survive then if you're fighting units that are on foot. You see, horse-bound units are special in that not only can they move more spaces than non-horse units, but after they attack, they can move away and let their buddies get a swing in on the same unit, whereas a on-foot unit would have their turn end right in front of the unit they attacked, so they'd be blocked the way for their friends. So, in other words, it's significantly easier for them to gang up on a single weak unit, which can result in a death that sets you back.
So, the best strategy is to guage the distance they can move, and then set up a wall of your strongest units in front, with all your weakest units further away, and just let them smash into you. Then, once their close, you can quickly steamroll over them so they don't get another turn to attack.
Also, as the difficult ramps up (and it's gonna be ramping up ALOT!), paying attention to the details becomes increasingly important. This is a screen I haven't shown yet. When you poise to attack someone, the game shows you the enemy's level, current HP, attack power, defense, and accuracy %. The numbers in the small box on the right of it show your units current hp, attack power, defense, and accuracy. Paying attention to accuracy is a huge deal, since it pays to know if a particular unit has a 100% chance of hitting your unit, and thus will damage him.
Anyway, proving that I'm a genius, during my fight with the mercenaries, I simultaneously antagonize the armor defense force squatting in front of Anphony before I have a chance to heal my units. They're crushed easily though, so it's not a very big deal.
Oh, and there's something I've been neglecting to do.
Have Deirdre talk to Ethlin, and Ethlin will be given a Light Sword! This is the first item you get that is both a sword and a magical item. Attacking up close with the sword uses it like a sword, but using at range causes it to use the "Light" white magic attack.
Anyway, for flavor, we have:
A conversation with Levin, has Levin just plain browbeating Sigurd over the whole "invading Agustria" thing. Levin's cool though, so it's ok.
One of the villages that we saved from the pillagers has this bit of info that possibly Eltshan and Lechesis are a tad too close for siblings... Oh, I'm sure this isn't significant at all.
Also, one of the villages give a "Iron Cutter" blade, which has a 100% chance of critical'ing armored units. It's pretty weak against everything else though.
Now have to capture Anphony. However, this is a great time to grind some of our newer characters up to shape, especially since Macbeth is level 22, our highest level enemy yet. Getting Dew up to level 20 is a major goal here, since Dew is an absolutely weak peon pre-upgrade, but an absolute murder-machine post-upgrade.
So I do that, and somewhere along the line both Lex and Aideen both hit level 20, and they all get teleported back to the home castle.
Take note that after upgrading, Dew then proceeds to absolutely humiliate the arena matches.
So now I debate whether I should grind a little bit more. I think not though, since my team is already very healthy, any more would be overkill. I have one more conversation though that I've been meaning to get out of the way, so I think I'll grind a bit more while I get that out of the way. Next time though.
