It's unclear what if any connections the world have.

I'm pretty bummed though, Irrational were adamant this was an original IP and it is anything but.

Apparently, in this day and age, a "new IP" means "the same game in a different setting."

I'm not super disappointed, since I wasn't all that excited to begin with...but I am annoyed they rolled out the hype machine for this one and used creative language to peak our interests. Bioshock Infinite sounds interesting (hey, nothing like a little racial superiority to put an edge on your game world), but I think that train has come and gone already for the most part. Bioshock was a smash hit. Bioshock 2 was middling. I wonder if they'll reinvigorate the IP with this, or drive it into the ground.

Thinking about this and reading up more, I do understand where they're coming from with this a bit more. Bioshock 2 was mediocre because it didn't have that sense of wonder and mystery that the original had -changing up the setting hopefully puts that back in. Still not super stoked but I get it.

Now, I enjoyed BS, a lot. I didn't play BS2, or System Shock.

And this game has the freshness of BS that I enjoyed. They're REALLY going heavy on the cinematic FPS elements. Super DUPER heavy. It makes it all very exciting, but we'll see how it plays out in game. The world looks gorgeous and detailed, and it seems like they're throwing way more enemies at you this time around, instead of 2 to 3 splicers at a time. The new powers also look awesome, and more realized than they were in BS.

And yes, if you were wondering, the theme of Bioshock Infinite is: caricature of a Steam Punk America, gone completely mad and xenophobic. 

Whether or not you find this cool will depend on whether you liked BS at all....but this video actually got me interested and excited for the game for the first time.

That... looked incredibly scripted. So much so that it brings me flashbacks of Oblivion's AI demo. This is either more scripted an FPS than Modern Warfare or that demonstration is nearly as fake as Milo. I'm actually hoping this is a concept demo, because I want to play a game, not watch invasive cinematics interrupting gameplay every 15 seconds.

Well...Bioshock has never really done cinematics. They've always opted for in-character viewing of stuff going on. But yes, it looks very scripted, but it's the early part of the game so that's expected. I think their setting also makes us automatically think "open-world" when it's not.

I assume the entire game isn't like that. And I have to say, they've really taken their art concept and execution to pretty much the highest level.

According to Wikipedia, it's not the same setting. Or is an alternate reality or something.

The history of the first Bioshock game is apparently the same as our own up to when that Randy Andy guy decided to go live under the Sea.

For some reason I can't see the entire game taking place in Columbia just because of how much shit gets destroyed in that 10 minute demo. But it very well may just be a tech demo sort of thing for the press, being as there are 2 years till release still.

It also doesn't seem so much "America goes down to path of craziness" as much as a single floating city named "Columbia" (the girl from Columbia pictures that represents the USA) or an uber-nationalistic something (and not completely unopposed at that). However, the existence of said ship is very very public, so unlikely to be unknown if this game was a prequel to BS.

For some reason I can't see the entire game taking place in Columbia just because of how much shit gets destroyed in that 10 minute demo. But it very well may just be a tech demo sort of thing for the press, being as there are 2 years till release still.

Is that where the protagonist gets thrown out of a window? I only saw being destroyed a few exhibit glass cases, a window, some dirigible-cloth-thing (canvas?) and a few flowers...

Also, you know, the shot of George Washington surrounded by the mongrel races at the beginning of the video. Even if it isn't "America" up there, and just some splinter group claiming the name, the implication is pretty clear whose origins they're talking about.

I still don't see the massive amount of destruction that has been discussed, other than 3 or 4 scripted events. The first was a bell tower suspended atop balloons that fell on its own. A gazebo that got blown up by a shell... some debris caused by the escape from that canteen and that thing Elizabeth did with said debris to make everyone wet so you could electrocute them, and a bridge, also in a interactive "cut-sceney" kinda way.

What seems clear is:
1) The flying city is absurdly big (so it just sprawls on and on with no apparent end except for what the plot dictates, and you only get to see a small amount of it at any given time).
2) A lot of it is actually independent floating islands. It isn't clear if it's all supported by some sort of superstructure other than the rail transport thingies.
3) Even if it's possible to flatten/destroy all the buildings, you're somewhat railroaded in that video, so you'll get a fresh piece of city to destroy each time.
