moody dwarf is too picky
« on: July 26, 2010, 11:15:10 pm »

The problem:
Possessed Dwarf claimed a craftsdwarf workshop, needing bones and bars of metal. made some steel bars and slaughtered a cow.
dwarf grabs the cow bones, but ignores the steel. i can't make much more, considering that 4z down, all i've gotten is dolomite and talc.

ideas:
wall him in. no questions asked.

suggestions?

Check his preferences. He might like copper, and only want to use that, for example.

Otherwise wall him in.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Try making rock blocks. I think there is a bug where they say rock bars and mean blocks.

Has he taken all the cow bones? He may need more bones before moving on to metal, or indeed, he may just be being picky. If that's the case, hope that a caravan gets to you before he goes insane?

So Ledi's been training the cats into an army of disposable warbeasts?  Why did no-one think of this sooner?!
Hellcannon seemed to be constantly on the verge of death and Levergedon before my turn helped, but ultimately what killed it was Ledi's cat army.

I have a two-step solution to your issue.
First, cover him in magma.
Then, don't care about whatever his demands where.

Problem solved!

Call me next time you have a problem with nobles, by the way.

Yep, my guess is he wants more bones.  Keep slaughtering stuff until he's working.

i did one better.
i funneled him in to a weapon trap with 6 steel serrated discs, a steel pick, and a bronze pick.
he went berserk

I don't have much patience for moody dwarves' specific requests. I try to keep a lot of things in stock from the caravans. If they can't find it in the stockpiles, or the huge piles of crap at the depot, and I can't make a serving-size amount with a work order, they can just suck it up and deal. I have 99 other dwarves to worry about.

He almost certainly needed more bones. Since each stack only counts as one item...

If they like a specific kind of metal they'll ignore all the steel and bronze in your stockpile until you smelt the kind they like.

If dwarves are too picky, remember that magma is indiscriminate.

Is he still calling for bones? If he is then he doesn't have enough. MOAR COWS MUST DIES!
